CARNALITY. After a little introspection and soul-searching, we all would have to admit that we all too often display some unsavory carnality. Not that it's encouraging, but God reveals 'from cover to cover' in the Bible that humanity has had this bent towards fleshliness since the beginning. Mark 10 takes place in the midst of the Lord Jesus heading to Jerusalem for the last week of His life before Calvary. In Mark 10:33-34, the Lord tells His disciples, 'Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and to the scribes; and they will condemn Him to death and deliver Him to the Gentiles, and they will mock Him, and scourge Him, and spit on Him, and kill Him. And on the third day, He will rise again.' Jesus knew exactly what was going to happen to Him. And this was the third time that He told the disciples of the ghastly details that would take place in His impending death. What is shocking this time is that we find the disciples still evidencing their carnality. And they're doing so about one week after these events take place. Mark wrote, 'Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to Him, saying, 'Teacher, we want You to do for us whatever we ask.' And He said to them, 'What do you want Me to do for you?' They said to Him, 'Grant us that we may sit, one on Your right hand and the other on Your left, in Your glory'' (10:35-37). Jesus just told them of all the suffering He would soon endure, and yet these two disciples are focused on themselves and want to be given the two highest positions in Jesus' new kingdom. In response, Mark also tells us, 'And when the ten heard it, they began to be greatly displeased with James and John.' Again, this insane carnality comes in the face of Jesus, literally being only a week from death. Are we carnal? Absolutely. But thankfully, God gave us His Word to give us strength to overcome carnality and thus glorify God!
