If you are a believer, you must know that everything that happens is under God’s control. That does not mean that God causes bad things to happen, but rather that He allows them and then uses everything for our good (Romans 12:2). In our continuing study of Acts, after Peter had explained to the Jews and other believers how they had nailed Jesus to the cross as part of God’s prearranged plan, he went on to explain this plan. It was God’s perfect plan.

CARNALITY. After a little introspection and soul-searching, we all would have to admit that we all too often display some unsavory carnality. Not that it's encouraging, but God reveals 'from cover to cover' in the Bible that humanity has had this bent towards fleshliness since the beginning. Mark 10 takes place in the midst of the Lord Jesus heading to Jerusalem for the last week of His life before Calvary. In Mark 10:33-34, the Lord tells His disciples, 'Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and to the scribes; and they will condemn Him to death and deliver Him to the Gentiles, and they will mock Him, and scourge Him, and spit on Him, and kill Him. And on the third day, He will rise again.' Jesus knew exactly what was going to happen to Him. And this was the third time that He told the disciples of the ghastly details that would take place in His impending death. What is shocking this time is that we find the disciples still evidencing their carnality. And they're doing so about one week after these events take place. Mark wrote, 'Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to Him, saying, 'Teacher, we want You to do for us whatever we ask.' And He said to them, 'What do you want Me to do for you?' They said to Him, 'Grant us that we may sit, one on Your right hand and the other on Your left, in Your glory'' (10:35-37). Jesus just told them of all the suffering He would soon endure, and yet these two disciples are focused on themselves and want to be given the two highest positions in Jesus' new kingdom. In response, Mark also tells us, 'And when the ten heard it, they began to be greatly displeased with James and John.' Again, this insane carnality comes in the face of Jesus, literally being only a week from death. Are we carnal? Absolutely. But thankfully, God gave us His Word to give us strength to overcome carnality and thus glorify God!

Hi, from Gardner, Kansas! It's Friday, November 1st, 2024, as I'm writing this and I am with my good friend and her dad, helping them this week. I came on Monday, and I'm going home on Sunday. We've been to rehabilitation, doctor's appointments, and anywhere else they needed to go. I count it a privilege to be able to help Sharmen McCollum and her dad, Gary Wright. I talked about their situation in my last column. Keep them in your prayers.

LITTLE CHILDREN. With all of their energy, they're hard to ignore. And even with all of the challenges of parenthood, they most certainly do bring immense joy to our lives. But the greatest joy any parent could ever have is impacting the lives of their children for all eternity. Although Jesus did heal three children (Matt. 15:28, 17:18, Mark 5:41-42), we really only see one small snippet of Jesus interacting with children. What makes this especially interesting is that Jesus is on His way to Jerusalem to die a cruel death on the cross. But He makes time for children. The Lord has been teaching and healing a great multitude. Matthew records, 'Then children were brought to him that he might lay his hands on them and pray' (19:13). Luke adds, 'Then they also brought infants to Him' (18:15). What we see is that people were intentional in wanting their kids to 'experience' Jesus. They wanted their kids to know Jesus up close, to see His love and compassion, to feel His touch, and to be blessed by Him. Did they know Jesus was the Messiah who would soon be crucified for the sins of the world? Not likely. But they still wanted Him to impact their kids! The question for parents today is this - 'Are you intentional in making sure your children are regularly learning about the Lord Jesus Christ?' Do you read the Bible to them, pray with them, and pray for them? Are you memorizing God's Word together? Do you sing Christ-exalting songs with them? Most importantly, are you living out before their eyes the transformed life of a true disciple of Jesus Christ? None of us can change yesterday. But we can impact today and tomorrow. Sadly, when the disciples saw people bringing kids to Jesus, they rebuked them. However, Jesus said, 'Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of God' (Matt. 19:14). As the song says, 'Jesus loves the little children, all the children of the world!'
