Haven Hamilton of Stockton was named to the Cloud County Community College Spring 2020 President's List. To be named to the president's list, students must be enrolled in a minimum of 12 hours of college coursework and must have earned a semester grade point average of 3.9-4.0.

DEB CARSTEN AND LEE LINDSEY were honored on June 19 for their many years of service to USD 271. Carsten was an administrative assistant at SGS for 16 years, while Lindsey taught and coached during his 28 years at SHS. Congratulations to the two of you...you will be missed! Enjoy your retirement!

It was “Christmas in July” (almost) at Sunday service as we started Chapter 22 of The Story, beginning with the book of Luke. We jumped from the Old Testament, and the 400 year gap inbetween that and the New Testament, to talk about the birth of Jesus. The time was perfect for Jesus to come to Earth. We started off by talking about the characteristics of Christian life. Characteristics voiced by members included: love, grace, faith, forgiveness, and obedience. Pastor Brian then asked for characteristics of Jesus. Those in attendance then submitted characteristics such as: Savior, teacher, prophet, and sinless, in addition to one’s mentioned earlier about Christians.

A memorial service was held Saturday morning, June 20, at the Ash Rock Cemetery, for Warren (Dale) Jones, age 74, who passed away April 4, 2020. Thirty some family, friends and neighbors gathered for a time of remembrance for Dale, led by his daughter, Kim Hill of Surprise, Arizona. Dale attended Ash Rock Grade School and graduated from Woodston Rural High School with the Class of 1963. Linda Melton drove to Wichita on Thursday, June 25th, to help granddaughter, Daniele Melton, and roommate, Catlin Doornlog, with yardwork and landscaping at their new home.

The Hobart Homemakers FCE group met June 22, 2020, at 7 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Stockton. Ruth Ann Bigge opened the meeting and Gail Gallaway read the minutes from the May meeting and the treasurer’s report and they were approved as read. We had four members attend. The only New Business was deciding the theme for our fair booth and ideas of how to decorate. The Rooks Co. Fair is coming soon, Aug. 2-8.

There will be a regular USD 271 Board of Education meeting on Monday, July 6th, beginning at 5:30 p.m., at the District Office.

MARK TRUMBO saw an unusual sighting at Webster Lake recently when, what looked to be a very large channel cat, turned out to be a large channel cat with another large channel cat’s head in its mouth. Mark said the heads on the fish were about the size of a basketball. He estimated the fish to weigh 20-25 lbs. apiece. As he went to take another picture, the fish flopped and ended up separating and swimming away.

The menus for the week beginning Monday, July 6, are as follows: Monday— Smothered steak, mashed potatoes, green beans, bread, pineapple. Tuesday—Chicken filet sandwich, three-bean salad, cantaloupe, bun, pudding. Wednesday—Turkey ala king, spinach salad, rosy pears, biscuit, brownie. Thursday—Pork cutlet, scalloped potatoes, California blend vegetables, bread, rosy applesauce. Friday—Baked fish, creamed potatoes, peas, bread, strawberries and bananas.
