THANKFUL! As is typically true of most children, it appears that Tad Lincoln had a soft spot for animals. It was his dad, Abe, that proclaimed Thanksgiving a National Holiday in 1863. That same year, some kind soul sent the Lincolns a turkey to be enjoyed for Christmas. However, young Tad named the gobbler "Jack" and taught it to follow him over the White House grounds. On Christmas eve, Abe told his son that Jack would no longer be a pet because he was meant for the dinner table. However, Tad objected, saying, "He’s a good turkey, and I don’t want him killed." The result? Abe wrote a pardon for Jack on a card and gave it to his son. Question: Has a pardon for you ever been "written on a card" and given to the Son? It's one thing for a soulless turkey to be spared but quite another for guilty "turkeys" like me and you to be pardoned by a holy God. The Biblical doctrine of forgiveness is founded on the fact that all of us are already guilty and under God's eternal judgment at conception. IOW, there's a humanly impassable gulf separating us from God. Just like the springs on a trampoline are in tension against each other, so there's a tension between God's holiness and His mercy. Moses says of God, "The LORD is longsuffering and abundant in mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression; but He by no means clears the guilty" (Num. 14:18). Nahum 1:3 says that God "will not at all acquit the wicked." Just as Abe's nature willingly forgave Jack for the sake of his beloved son, so God's merciful nature longs to forgive sinners for the sake of His beloved Son! The difference is that God's holiness cannot overlook sin. Sin must be punished. That's why Jesus became man. He came to suffer God's righteous anger so that whosoever trusts in Him could be forgiven. May we whose names are written in the Book of Life be truly thankful for this "unspeakable gift" (2 Cor. 9:15) that no words can fully describe!
