We continued our look into the Book of Job this week. Lessons we have learned so far include that Job did not blame God despite having it all and then losing everything he had. He was a faithful man of integrity. We also learn that we need to be slow to judge others. We often don't know what others are going through. And finally, we understand that we need to be good listeners, especially when trying to help others through difficulties.

HUMBLE PIE. That's often what proud people tend to eat again and again. Haman was one of those who ended up eating humble pie. He was a character in the Book of Esther and became an enemy to a Jew named Mordecai and all of Israel. This was in the mid-400s BC in the Persian empire under the rule of Xerxes. He had taken Esther, a Jew, to be his wife. And it was her uncle, Mordecai, who was a thorn in Haman's side. What can we learn from Haman? First of all, Paul wrote, 'Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap' (Gal. 6:7). Haman wanted to force Mordecai to lead him on a horse through the streets, but Haman had to eat humble pie and lead Mordecai around. Secondly, Solomon wrote, 'Whoever digs a pit will fall into it, And he who rolls a stone will have it roll back on him' (Prov. 26:27). This is a boomerang effect. In other words, often, when a person seeks harm to others, they suffer the harm. That certainly was Haman's case. He ordered the building of a gallows for killing Mordecai, yet Haman choked on his humble pie and ended up dying on that gallows. Thirdly, Solomon also wrote, 'Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before a fall' (Prov. 16:18). Indeed, Haman's pride resulted in his own fall from power and his own destruction.
