THIS PICTURE OF THE FIRST ENGINE COMING INTO STOCKTON, dated September 1885, should bring back memories for a lot of the community, as a mural of the scene was depicted on the Methodist Church’s Thrift Shop building for many years. Does anyone remember who painted the mural on the west brick wall? We know, do you?

WE’RE GOING TO NEED A BIGGER BOAT! With the Nova Theatre showing the blockbuster movie “Jaws” this weekend to celebrate its 50th anniversary, it was only fitting that the Yesteryear picture be one of the iconic shark itself! PRIOR TO THE 1989 MICKEY GILLEY CONCERT on the Thursday night of the Rooks County Free Fair, a flag pole and monument was dedicated to the late J. O. “Jimmie” Copper for the extra hours he donated to the success of the Fair for many years. Shown is the Stockton VFW Post #8873 raising the American and MIA flags.

HERE COME THE TROTTERS! Harness horse racing was a significant part of the Rooks County Free Fair for many years, dating back to the 1920s. In fact, the Fair was the first place in Kansas to feature parimutuel harness racing in 1989, complete with a page in the fair book dedicated to “How To Bet.”
