Kansas celebrates signing of Armistice November 11, 1918

One hundred and five years ago, on November 11th, 1918, Kansans celebrated the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I. However, on November 7th, 1918, four days before the signing of the Armistice ending World War I, the United Press Association released a news flash to over four hundred newspapers indicating that an Armistice had been signed. Soon after receiving the news flash, newspapers throughout the United States published headlines indicating that an Armistice had been signed and the war was over.

1954 Yesteryear Letter

Christi (Buss) Tuttle recently ran across a letter about her Uncle Darrel Buss, who is 94 years old and lives in Lakewood, Colorado. Her uncle was stationed in Frankfort, Germany, with the U. S. Army Crops V in 1954. He sent this typed letter home, and one of his cousins kept it through the years.

Area Fall Harvest Update

As of Monday, October 28th, the area fall harvest already stands at 100% of last year’s crop. The corn and bean harvests are almost completed, with the milo still coming in, with about 75% of the harvest done.

Rooks County to vote on modernizing Alcohol Sales Law in upcoming General Election

In this general election, Rooks County residents will have a chance to weigh in on updating the county’s longstanding alcohol sales regulation. Since 1987, Kansas counties have had the option to opt out of a rule known as the “food rule,” which requires businesses to earn a minimum of 30 percent of their gross receipts from food sales in order to serve alcohol. Forty-six counties have already eliminated this requirement as of January 2024.

City approves several requests during meeting

During the Stockton City Commission meeting on Tuesday, October 15th, Pastor Ted Stapleton was present to ask for help with the city utility bill for Blessed Beginnings Daycare. The facility is bringing in approximately $6,600.00 per month, with bills for $14,235.00 per month. He asked if the City could work with them on the utility bill. The commissioners said the facility could ask for the 2¢ discount for two years. The commissioners said they would discuss other options at the next meeting. Stapleton said the Board is looking at ways to make changes to help the daycare, noting that the facility has 18 children at this time and is licensed to take care of 30.
