City takes first step towards new nursing home facility

The Stockton City Commission has signed a contract with Parkway Construction as a first step for a building design plan of a new facility for the Solomon Valley Manor. At this point in time, the focus will be on developing a design that will meet the present-day needs of the residents and staff. Information about the cost, design, loan and grant applications will be provided to the public by administrator Amanda Atkisson as the project moves forward during the next few months. The Commission also discussed having Atkisson put a committee together to gather ideas from other sources that would best accommodate a new facility for the community.

Bryant and Kerr win seats on Stockton City Commission

In last Tuesday’s General Election Adam Bryant and Jesica Kerr won the two Stockton City Commission seats which were up for grabs. Bryant (403) and Kerr (393) outdistanced a third candidate, Leo Inglsbee (222), who was also vying for the position.

Mill Street Market this Saturday, Nov. 14th

The Mill Street Market in Alton will be held this Saturday, November 14th from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with vendors displaying their wares at The Front Porch Event Center and Bakery, and the Legion Hall, both located on Mill Street.

Phillips County Sheriff’s officer makes heroic rescue in fiery crash

PHILLIPS COUNTY—Last Wednesday, Nov. 4, at approximately 5:10 p.m., Deputy John Miner stopped to assist a disabled motorist on Highway 383, midway between Woodruff and Long Island. Pulling in behind two stopped vehicles, Miner activated the emergency lights on his sheriff’s patrol pickup truck. Two families, a total of seven people in two pickup trucks, with the disabled truck towing a trailer as the occupants were moving from Wisconsin to Arizona, were passing through northwest Phillips County.
THIS IS WHAT IS LEFT of Phillips County Deputy John Miner’s patrol truck, after it was hit by a semi and burned due to diesel fuel that sprayed over the crash site when the fuel tank of the semi ruptured upon impact with the other three vehicles.

Area fall harvest update

As of Tuesday morning, November 10th, the Stockton Farmers Union Elevator has taken in a total of 606,000 bushels of milo and 173,000 bushels of corn. The Woodston Coop has taken in 175,00 bushels of milo and 407,000 bushels of corn. Woodston is still taking in quite a bit of corn at this time.
As it stands, the 2020 fall harvest is approximately 89% of last year’s crop, and 110% of a five-year average.

Subscribers will get the paper a day late

Due to the Veterans Day holiday falling on Wednesday this week, subscribers to the Stockton Sentinel will receive their paper a day late. With the post office being closed on Wednesday, the newspaper will not go out until Thursday, making its arrival at your address a day later than usual.

It should be noted that there will be no interruption to those who get their newspaper from the stand outside our office, over the counter or online.

We continue to see an increase of positive cases within our county. The absenteeism rate is increasing (3.1% above baseline from 2019-2020). The positive testing rate has increased over the last week. There is an increase in the incidence rate in the county, so we are monitoring numbers closely.

We plan to continue in-person learning for the week of November 9-13, 2020. If there is any adjustment required to the learning setting due to concerns in the schools, we will update your family quickly following a decision.
