Power lines cause freak accident

Body
Madison and Sierra Reed, and David Reed were heading home to Stockton from the Thomas County Speedway races on Saturday evening, June 19th, since they had been called off due to severe weather in the area. Madison was driving the pickup and enclosed trailer for his IMCA Sport Compact. They were about nine miles west of Hoxie with the wind getting increasingly stronger with gusts clocked at 80 miles per hour. The plan was to drive to Hill City for shelter. It was at the time, with the storm raging all around them and the visibility very limited, when Madison saw low-hanging power lines blowing across the highway. There was little time to react with Madison slowing down as fast as he could while saying a few choice words. Three, 115,00-volt power lines hit high on the top part of the cab, shattering the windshield before skimming across the roof and hitting the enclosed trailer dead center. Madison, who already had his foot on the brakes continued to try and stop, and with the power lines hooked onto the trailer, some utility poles were yanked out of the ground, and the force of the power lines cutting into the trailer pulled the truck and trailer backwards before it came to a complete stop.
THIS PHOTO shows how the power lines skimmed the top of the truck cab before slicing into the enclosed trailer carrying Madison’s racecar. The accident occurred on Saturday evening, June 19th during a severe thunderstorm with winds clocked at 80 mph.
