Kansas teen drove through activated railroad crossing arm

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2014 Ford Escape driven by 17-yearold Onna Jorge-Thelisma of Pittsburg, Kansas, was westbound on 515th Avenue just east of S 240th Street. The driver attempted to drive through an active railroad crossing arm. A southbound train struck the SUV. Jorge-Thelisma, who was properly restrained, was not injured according to the KHP.

Commissioners approved purchase of John Deere 950 for road & bridge dept.

The first order of business for the Rooks County Commission on Tuesday, July 15th, was a meeting with appraiser Ronda Morgan. She informed the commissioners that Carol and Jeff Van Dyke have filled out the application for their house’s tax abatement that was destroyed in a fire this past spring. The commissioners will sign the abatement as presented at the next meeting when all three are present, since commissioner Tracy Rudman was absent from the morning meeting.

Crucifix installed at St. Thomas Catholic Cemetery

The idea of installing a crucifix to watch over the St. Thomas Catholic Cemetery in Stockton was first discussed at a Knights of Columbus meeting more than five years ago. After reaching out to various sources, it was determined that the cost would be significantly higher than what the Knights could afford, even with the fundraising efforts that had been undertaken.
