Numerous deer, plus a calf and a ‘coon, contribute to accidents

On Tuesday, September 20, 2022, at 8:05 a.m., Sean Nowlin, 51, of Hays was northbound on Cemetery Road when he failed to yield at the crossing of K-18, striking the left side of a flatbed trailer being pulled by a 2019 Peterbilt semi truck, driven by Michael Felsburg, 67, of Great Bend. The 2004 Ford F-150 pickup, driven by Nowlin, was destroyed and had to be towed. Both drivers were properly restrained, and no injuries were reported.

Accidents all on or near U.S. 183

A hit-and-run accident occurred on Sept. 5 at 8:00 p.m., when Nicole Pulec, driving west on N. 5th between N. Walnut and U. S. 183, side-swiped a legally-parked vehicle but left the scene. The parked vehicle, a 2000 Chevrolet C25 pickup, owned by Helen K. King, was damaged on the right-side, rear fender and bumper area. The vehicle Pulec was driving was a 2017 Hyundai Elantra which sustained damage across the entire passenger side. Pulec received a citation for her fault in the hit-andrun incident.

Multiple accidents reported from sheriff’s department

On Thursday, July 28, at 7:23 a.m., Sheryl Kollman, 54, of Stockton, was traveling east on K Terrace near 16 Terrace when she struck a deer that was crossing to the north side of the road. Kollman, and two children, ages 4 and 6, were wearing seatbelts, and no injuries were reported. Kollman was driving a 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander that sustained minor damage to the front end, including the undercarriage, but was driveable.

Three accidents in one day highlight this week’s report from sheriff’s office

On June 12, just after 9:00 a.m., a two-vehicle accident occurred at the intersection of North Elm and North 2nd Streets. Katherine M. Trible, 72, of Stockton, was southbound on N. Elm St. when she failed to yield to a vehicle traveling east on N. 2nd St., driven by Robert J. Givens, 37, also of Stockton. Trible was driving a 2001 Pontiac Bonneville, and Givens was driving a 2003 Oldsmobile Alero. Both vehicles were towed due to damage. Both drivers were wearing seatbelts.

Multiple accidents reported from sheriff’s office

On April 22, at about 2:40 p.m., Tom Montoia, 68, of Zurich, was southbound on Cemetery Rd. near Mill St., when he had a medical issue that caused him to black out. The vehicle he was driving left the road and struck a a speed limit sign and the porch on a house at 200 S. Cemetery Rd. The front end of the 2016 Jeep Patriot he was driving sustained damage but was still operable. Montoia was wearing his seatbelt, and no injuries were reported.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year... for deer accidents, anyway!

On April 8, 2022, at 5:18 a.m., Louis J. Singer, 28, of Denver, Colo., was southbound on 10 Rd. and struck a deer between R and S Roads. Singer, driving a 2018 Chevy C2500, owned by AEMS Construction of Aurora, Colo., was wearing his seatbelt, and no injuries were reported. The pickup, however, had to be towed due to damage on the front and passenger side.

Starting out the reports of vehicle accidents, dating back to Jan. 27 through February 14, is the rollover of one of the trash trucks belonging to the City of Stockton, on January 27. The driver, Drake Champagne, age 24, of Stockton, was headed east on 10 Rd. at around 11:00 a.m., when he drove toward the south edge of the road, overcorrected, and drove into the north ditch and down a hill, rolling over onto the driver’s side into a drainage culvert. Champagne was transported to Rooks County Hospital by Stock-ton EMS. The trash truck, a 2013 Freightliner M210, was completely disabled with extensive damage to the driver’s side and front end and had to be hauled away by Kibbe’s Towing.

Deer season for fenders and bumpers!

On Nov. 18, 2021, at 10:48 a.m., Don Dopita, age 60, of Plainville, was driving west on U.S. 24, less than a half mile from 15 Rd., when a deer entered the roadway from the ditch. Dopita, who was driving a 2014 Ford F-150 pickup owned by Maverick Oil, LLC, struck the deer on the driver’s side front corner but the vehicle was still driveable. Dopita was wearing his seatbelt, and no injuries were reported.
