90 Years Ago

There will not be a “98 Years Ago” column for the remainder of this year. This is due to the fact that there is nothing available on newspapers.com for the 1924 Rooks County Review starting in September.

The Rooks County Fair opened Tuesday and continues on for the four days. The grounds have been put in shape, the race track and ball grounds have been worked over, the Scott Greater Shows have taken the midway space and are ready for the crowds.

If there is oil under Rooks County, it is going to be found out. Drilling operations are becoming active to the extent that two wells will be sunk, drilling operation proper to start within a short time.

go When a Dodge touring car in which Philo Hammond and Irvin Turnbull, with two girl companions, were riding last Tuesday night overturned, Irvin came out of the accident with a fractured arm. The young men and girls were on their way to Phillipsburg to attend a dance.

The election carried some surprising results as it was “figured” that the race for some of the county offices would be close, but it appeared to be a clean walk-away.

Last Thursday night the two young fellows, Harry Smith and Albert Evans, who have been in the county jail for some time, broke out by crawling through the ventilators in the ceiling of the room in which the jail is located.

Monday of this week. I. R. Elred, a real estate agent of Logan, accompanied by two men by the name of Post and Scott went to Wakeeney, Ellis and other points of that section all riding in a Ford owned by Elred.

Matthew McMichael, who lives on the Jim Creek Ranch northeast of Stockton, was severely burned by lightning during the electrical storm on Tuesday evening. Matthew and a brother, Howard, were in the barn and had finished milking the cows and waiting for the storm to subside.

The search for Zelma Osborn, a Codell girl, continues a mystery with the parents. S. A. Turner, a Kansas City electrician, is charged with inducing the girl to go with him under the pretense of going to Middleton, Ohio to visit the girl’s sister. Mr.

The time for the annual Fair of Rooks County is close at hand. The officers are working hard to make this year’s Fair eclipse any former meeting of the Fair. The free acts have been contracted besides a number of other entertaining features.
