THIS KODACHROME SLIDE is of Charles Reed. William Robert Skinner took the picture (the mid 1960s) of Charles standing down at the creek near his farmhouse. Bill Skinner sent this photo to the Sentinel and reminisced about their trips back to Stockton during the holidays because it always included visiting the Reed family.

Skinner, are pictured. The photo (1949/1950) is in the front yard of Judge Skinner’s residence at 521 North Cedar. Bill said his sister loves this picture because it is one of her with her dad and grandfather.

PICTURED IS TREE FARMER LEO BIRD (center) in February of 1991 explaining the benefits of a thirteen-year-old windbreak on his Rooks County farm northwest of Stockton to KSU foresters Bill Louchs of Manhattan and Jim Strine of Hays. Bird was an authority on trees in west-central Kansas, planted numerous varieties, and even started his trees through stratification, which is the collecting and burying of nuts to grow in his nursery, where they would develop into seedlings for transplanting on his farm.

BETTY AND LARRY LALA.
BETTY AND LARRY LALA received the 1990 Kansas Bankers Association Windbreak Award. The Lalas started the windbreak by planting twin rows of Eastern Red Cedar in 1957. They added another row along the north side of their property in 1971. The windbreak was designed to provide winter protection for the livestock and added defense for the entire farmstead area.
