TOPEKA—The leader of a small group of self-described satanists and at least one other person were arrested on Friday, March 28th, following a scuffle inside the Kansas Statehouse arising from an effort by the group’s leader to start a “black mass” in the rotunda. About 30 members of the Kansas City-Area Satanic Grotto, led by its president, Michael Stewart, rallied outside the Statehouse for the separation of church and state.

TOPEKA—Justice Evelyn Wilson, who has served on the Kansas Supreme Court since January 2020, announced that she would resign effective July 4th. Wilson was appointed to the Supreme Court after serving as a judge in the 3rd Judicial District, which is composed of Shawnee County.

KANSAS CITY, KANSAS—According to the United States attorney, a federal grand jury in Kansas returned an indictment charging a Nebraska contractor for allegedly defrauding customers across multiple states by failing to construct buildings after being paid. According to court documents, Bobby Bates, Sr., 42, of Grand Island, Nebraska, is charged with two counts of wire fraud.

WASHINGTON—On Tuesday night, March 4th, at President Trump’s direction, Secret Service Director Sean Curran presented Devarjaye “DJ” Daniel with an honorary badge. Daniel, who has battled brain cancer since he was six years old, became the youngest ever Secret Service agent.

FRANKLIN COUNTY—A police officer was forced to shoot a dog during an incident onMonday, March 3rd, in Ottawa. Just after 2:00 p.m.

THOMAS COUNTY—Just after 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, February 23rd, the Thomas County Sheriff’s Office initiated a pursuit involving a stolen vehicle reported out of Sheridan County, according to a media release.

Several brands of canned tuna sold at stores, including Kroger (Dillons), Trader Joe’s, Costco, and H-E-B, have been recalled because they might be contaminated with bacteria that causes botulism, a potentially fatal food poisoning. Tri-Union Seafoods of El Segundo, California, recalled certain lots of tuna sold under the Genova, Van Camp’s, H-E-B, and Trader Joe’s brand names, according to the US Food and Drug Administration.

JUNCTION CITY—A petition has been filed to recall Jeff Underhill from office as a Junction City Commissioner. Geary County Clerk Courtney Gilbert said that the petition states the grounds for recall and is being provided to County Attorney Krista Blaisdell to determine if the grounds are valid and align with legal statutes.

ELLIS COUNTY—The Board of Ellis County Commissioners is pleased to announce Melissa Miller has been hired as the new director of the Ellis County Health Department. Miller brings twelve years of public health experience as its office manager with the Greeley County Health Department.
