Meet the newest Stockton City office employee

Sara Balthazor is Stockton City’s newest office employee. She started on Monday, March 4th, and oversees the duties of billing and city code enforcement. She is also one of the friendly faces people will see when they step up to the window at the City office to pay bills, or need a question answered.

City board positions open if you’re interested

During her report at the Stockton City Commission meeting on Tuesday, April 2nd, city clerk Kayla Hilbrink stated there are city board positions open, so if anyone is interested in serving on a board, they should contact the City office. She also noted that the auditors had been at the office.

Couples honored as Master Farmer/Homemaker

On Friday, March 22nd, six couples were honored as the 2023 Class of Kansas Master Farmers and Master Farm Homemakers in recognition of their leadership in agriculture, environmental stewardship, and service to their communities. The annual awards banquet was held at the Hilton Garden Inn in Manhattan.

Lansing Correctional Facility minimum-custody inmate Bradley G. Verstraete apprehended

LANSING, Kansas—Lansing Correctional Facility (LCF) Minimum-custody resident Bradley G. Verstraete has been apprehended.

Verstraete was taken into custody Monday morning, April 8, 2024, by officials from the Lansing Police Department. He was arrested on the Kansas Department of Corrections escape warrant without incident.

Verstraete had been placed on escape status after he walked away from the minimum-security unit at LCF on April 7, 2024.

No other details are being released as the investigation is ongoing.

Minimum-custody resident Bradley G. Verstraete escaped from Lansing Correctional Facility

LANSING, Kansas—Minimum-custody resident Bradley G. Verstraete was placed on escape status at approximately 9:00 p.m. after it was reported that he walked away from the Lansing Correctional Facility on Sunday, April 7, 2024.

Verstraete, a 54-year-old white male, was reported missing when the resident could not be located at the minimum-security unit. This walkaway does not impact the security or operations of the medium-maximum secure compound.

Hutchinson Correctional Facility Resident Death

Hutchinson Correctional Facility (HCF) resident Watson Kevin Bradford, 51, died Wednesday, April 3, 2024. He was found unresponsive in his cell Wednesday afternoon. Staff began life-saving measures immediately and continued after emergency medical services arrived. Mr. Bradford was pronounced deceased by medical staff. The cause of death is pending the results of an independent autopsy.

Per protocol, when a resident dies in the custody of the KDOC, the death is under investigation by the KDOC and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. The investigation is currently ongoing.

County has busy morning session

Starting the Rooks County Commission meeting on Tuesday, March 26th, was a report by commissioner Jake Prockish about the surplus equipment at the Rooks County Golf Course. The golf board would like to put the surplus items in lots and sell them for sealed bids.
ROOKS COUNTY EMPLOYEES, treasurer employee Terri Moore (24 years), emergency management director Butch Post (14 years), and treasurer Kim Northup (18 years) were recognized at a retirement brunch held in their honor for their service to the County on Tuesday, March 26th.
