TOPEKA The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), with assistance from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and other partners, updated findings on the white powder found in letters sent to Kansas legislators and public officials.

Barbara “Barb” Jean Schindler, of Stockton, Kansas, passed away unexpectedly on May 8, 2023, at Hays Medical Center, at the age of 77.

She was born on June 26, 1945, to Reuben V. and Neva G. (Hayes) Richardson in Norton, Kansas. Barb married Kermit Schindler on December 3, 1961, in Phillipsburg, Kansas. They later divorced. To this union were born three children: Neva, Kermit Jr., and Rena.

Letters containing suspicious white powder being investigated across Kansas

TOPEKA The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE), the Office of the State Fire Marshal, the Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP), and several local police departments and fire departments have responded today after mail was received by legislators and other public officials containing a suspicious white powder.

Mervin Randall “Merv” Hathaway

Mervin Randall “Merv” Hathaway, 92, formerly of Hudson, passed away May 25, 2023, at Good Samaritan Society-Hutchinson Village.

He was born September 29, 1930, in Stafford, to Elmer William and Dora Louise (Hart) Hathaway.

Merv attended school in Stafford and St. John. He served in the United States Army from 1948-1949, in the Army Reserve from 1949-1953, and in the United States Air Force from 1953-1961. Merv owned and operated a service station in Haysville and Hudson, but found his true passion as a drug and alcohol counselor for the Larned State Hospital.
