Homestead display at Rooks County Historical Museum

Body
Rooks County Museum coordinator Sue McFarland has contributed a series to the local newspapers during the last few months highlighting the “Names On The Wall,” detailing historical facts about Rooks County’s Civil War veterans. Now she and the museum board have gone a step further with McFarland working on an eight-foot tall display of Rooks County highlighting where these Civil War veterans filed their initial Homestead claims throughout the area. When completed there will be at least 120 numbered stars on the map of the homesteads which will coordinate with a list of names on file as well as the year the homestead was filed. (It is estimated that approximately 350 to 400 Civil War veterans settled in the area.)
THE ROOKS COUNTY HISTORICAL MUSEUM has a large map of the county on display showing the initial Homestead claims filed by the Civil War veterans.

New waterlines needed by Solomon Valley Manor

Body
At the Stockton City Commission meeting held on Tuesday, May 18th, clerk Courtney Flower informed the commissioners that the City will need to change out the waterlines to provide better flow to the proposed site of the new Solomon Valley Manor. The lines will need to be replaced with eight-inch pipe with shut-off valves also installed. The lines would be installed from Main Street to either Ash or Elm Street with an initial estimated cost of $800,00.00 to 1,000,000.00 for the project. Flower is gathering more information and quotes, as well as starting the process of grant applications. Flower will keep the commissioners updated as this project moves forward.

Stitch & Chatter receives special gift from the past

Body
Quilting clubs, sewing circles and quilting bees have been part of our country’s history for generations when family, friends and neighbors would get together to sew a quilt for a new baby, a wedding or just to spend a cold winter afternoon together. And so it is that the past repeats itself and comes around full circle in delightful and unexpected ways.
MEMBERS OF THE STITCH & CHATTER CLUB, that had been organized over 60 years ago in Rooks County, sewed the friendship quilt that is pictured. John and Deborah Sidewell presented the quilt to Idona Duncan, whose sewing business is also called “Stitch & Chatter.” Pictured are Idona Duncan, Deborah and John Sidewell.
