Thelma Berland appointed to serve on Stockton School Board

At the Stockton USD 271 Board of Education meeting held on Monday, September 12th, the board members voted to appoint Thelma Berland to fill the open board member position vacated by Mark Billinger. They noted that Berland can bring her history and experience as an educator onto the Board. The vote was five yes (Stephanie Niblock, Jesse Stithem, Daphne Plumer, LeAnn Dix and Chad Sterling) and 1 no (BJ Hoeting). There were four applicants who had expressed interest in the position: Thelma Berland, Julie Glendening, Ginger Riffel and Mike Oller. The other three applicants were urged to run for the four open positions during the next election.

Across the nation, in the mid 70’s, groups of teenagers were becoming excited about their faith in Jesus and student-led Bible study groups were popping up across the country. The same thing was happening in Phillipsburg, Kansas where teenagers gathered for Bible study and called themselves Reach Out.

Commissioners approve annual fall musk thistle spraying program

At the start of the Rooks County Commission meeting held on Tuesday, September 13th, the commissioners met with noxious weed director Mike Klein. He was at the morning session to get permission to offer the yearly fall musk thistle spraying program. The commissioners voted to allow Klein to move ahead with the annual fall program.

Rooks State Fish Lake remains in “Warning” Advisory for Blue-Green Algae

For the third week in a row, Rooks County State Fishing Lake in under an active “Warning” Advisory for Blue-Green Algae.

The latest advisories were released Thursday afternoon, September 15, from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP).

No other lakes in the immediate area are under a “Warning” or “Watch” advisory at this time.

Commissioners approve 2023 City budget

At the start of the meeting held on Tuesday, September 6th, the Stockton City Commission held two Public Hearings. The first was to set the Revenue Neutral Rate for the City, and the second was to review the 2023 budget. There was no public discussion, so the hearings were closed and the commissioners approved Resolution 22-4, setting the Revenue Neutral Rate for the coming year. The 2023 budget was approved later in the meeting.
