IMPOSSIBLE??? Has God ever brought you face to face with what seems like an impossibility? How will I pay my bills? How can I go forward after my loss? Life at times can be difficult and might even seem impossible. That's when we need grace to believe God. It was no different when two close relatives found out they would give birth to sons? Elizabeth faced such an "impossibility" when both she and her husband (Zacharias) were well past the age of child-bearing. Mary faced the "impossibility" when she was a virgin who would bear a son having never known the man (Joseph) to whom she was betrothed. Both couples were staring at a similar "impossibility." But their responses were quite different. Elizabeth's husband, Zacharias, was a priest. When the angel Gabriel revealed to him that they would have a son (John the Baptist), he was standing only a few feet from the ark of God's Presence which was just past the thick curtain in front of him. Zacharias had just brought flaming coals into the Holy Place from the altar of burnt offering when Gabriel told him of John's coming birth. Boiling his response down to one word, Zacharias - the priest, the one standing just feet from God's Presence - answered, "Impossible!" Six months later, having received Mary into her home, Elizabeth, "filled with the Holy Spirit" (1:41) tells Mary, "Blessed is she who believed" (1:45). Implied is that Elizabeth had also responded, "Impossible!" Not Mary. She told Gabriel, "Let it be to me according to your word" (1:38). Zacharias and Elizabeth were "both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments" (Luke 1:60) and yet failed to believe. But Mary believed Gabriel's promise that "with God nothing will be impossible!" (1:37). Are you facing an "impossibility"? If so, it hasn't taken God by surprise. May He give you grace to trust Him and His will as well as believe, as did Mary, that with God absolutely nothing is IMPOSSIBLE!
