Bishop Sample did not leave any kind of a footprint in the history of Rooks County. However, his story is worthy of some attention because his Civil War military service is different than those of the veterans introduced so far. Bear near present Liebenthal, Kansas, May 16, 1864, by Company L of the regiment, Indian resistance increased rapidly along all routes of travel—especially on the Santa Fe, Smokey Hill Trails and the Platte River Road to Denver.

Bishop Munn Sample

Bishop Sample was born July 26, 1839 at Graysville, Monroe County, Ohio, son of William and Julia Sample. When his family moved to Wisconsin, he lost first his father from an illness. He lost his mother three weeks later, dying at Viroqua, Wisconsin. He was the fourth of fifteen children. When the two oldest boys went to war in the Civil War, the family was broken up and never reunited.

Rooks County continues to see new COVID-19 cases throughout the county. The absenteeism rate is decreasing and is at 1.1% above the baseline from 2019-2020. The positive testing rate has decreased  to 27.2% this week. We continue to monitor numbers closely.
