RoCo Arts Council hosting an old-fashioned ice cream social
If you like ice cream (and who doesn’t?), come on over to the intersection of U.S. Highways 183 and 24 in Stockton this Saturday, July 30 at 7:00 p.m. The RoCo Arts Council will be serving up ice cream and providing all the toppings you need to create your own sundae! In addition, there will be sidewalk chalk and yard games, plus an opportunity to view the plan for the large blank wall at the southeast corner of the stoplight intersection!
RoCo Arts Council needs financial assistance and support from the community to get this project literally off the ground and onto the blank wall! In addition to enjoying your ice cream sundae, you will be able to purchase raffle tickets for a beautiful “Log Cabin” quilt that RoCo Arts Council will be giving away to one lucky winner. Between now and September 5, you can purchase raffle tickets at or “six tix” for $20! These tickets are available from Nancy Becker, Michelle Wieden and Clarene Goodheart. The quilt, which measures 83” x 109” was quilted by Stitch & Chatter as a donation, which the RoCo Arts Council greatly appreciates!
If you are not interested in the quilt, your donations in any dollar amount are welcomed and appreciated! While you can donate any amount you wish, there are four levels of giving that may appeal to you: Be a SUPPORTER for $100! Be a PATRON for $500! Be an ADVOCATE for $1,000! And be a CHAMPION for $5,000! Names of donors in these four categories will be displayed at the site when the project is completed. We will continue to accept financial gifts at any time, not just at Saturday’s event.
The arts council is anxious to get our commissioned artist started on the Mural Project: painting a “Greetings from Stockton” Postcard on the wall. Not only will you get to meet the artist, Matt Miller, from Hays, but you will also get to view what will soon become a postcard depicting important features of our town and the countryside. Covering the blank wall, which is 17-ft. tall at the highest part and 47-ft. long, the mural will have the name “STOCKTON” in letters that are five to six feet high, with each letter depicting icons and images of things and places that uniquely identify familiar features in and around Stockton, such as the Rooks County Courthouse, the water tower, Nova Theatre, the bowling alley, and more.
Towns and cities all over this area of the state and throughout Kansas, and literally all over the country, are investing in their towns by painting murals that tell the story of the community, their heritage and the important features that identify their hometowns. Travelers passing through this high-traffic intersection of U.S. 183 and 24 will know, just by seeing the mural and by stopping to take pictures, that Stockton is a friendly, progressive and family-oriented, proud of what makes this place our home.
Please come out, enjoy the evening, create an ice cream sundae, and leave a donation to get this project going! We look forward to seeing many of you and introducing you to the artist who will bring the wall to life!
