Second case of UK variant identified in Kansas

A second Kansas case of the United Kingdom, or UK, variant known as B.1.1.7, has been identified in Sedgwick County. The first case was identified earlier this month in Ellis County. A case investigation has been conducted and close contacts notified. The case investigation indicates that the person likely became infected while traveling out of state. Further details concerning the patient, including demographics, will not be released.

Commissioners approve purchase of desks for register of deeds’ office

At the regular meeting of the Rooks County Commission held on Tuesday, February 2nd, the three commissioners met with register of deeds April Brown, who was requesting permission to update her office. She would like to purchase two desks that can be separated for COVID-19 social distancing, as well as move some electrical wiring. Painting of the office will also be done. The commissioners approved the purchase of the two desks from the register of deeds’ budget, with the funds for the electrical wiring to come out of her tech fund.

KDOT announces approved January bids

The Kansas Department of Transportation announces approved bids for state highway construction and maintenance projects. The letting took place Jan. 20, 2021, in Topeka. Some of the bids may include multiple projects that have been bundled based on proximity and type of work.

STOCKTON HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS (from left) Cappi Hoeting, Tierra Yohon, Coryn Hahn, Addie Struckhoff, Delanee Bedore, Cameron Lindsey and Camden Iwanski were inducted into National Honor Society on Monday in a ceremony which took place in the afternoon at Stockton High School. NHS was formed in 1921 with its objectives being to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote worthy leadership, and to encourage the development of character in the nation’s secondary school students.

Commissioners answer questions about no PODS in residential areas

Jon Jones met with the Stockton City Commission on Tuesday, February 2nd to inquire about the zoning regulations for putting a container (POD) on his land in Stockton that is zoned commercial. He also asked why containers are not allowed in residential areas.

School board approves Senior trip request

During the Stockton USD No. 271 Board of Education meeting held on Monday, February 1st, Stockton Seniors Logan Winklepleck, Jace Hull and Chloe Plumer were present to ask permission for an additional travel day for the annual senior class trip. The trip will be to Grand Lake, Colorado in March. The class does have the funds for the trip, and have two date options for consideration. They requested the additional travel day, as well as use of the Tiger bus for transportation. After a short discussion, the board members voted to approve the requests as presented, with the date of the trip to be determined by the class. The District will also check to see if snow chains are required for the bus.

FHSU student-athlete tests positive for UK virus variant; rapid testing beginning

From HAYSPOST.com—In a news release issued jointly by the Ellis County Health Department and Fort Hays State University on Wednesday, February 3, a Fort Hays State University studentathlete who tested positive for the CO- VID-19 virus as part of the university’s weekly student athlete testing program, has been identified through whole genome sequencing as positive for the UK variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.

Rooks County has seen a decrease in new COVID-19 cases throughout the county. This week, the absenteeism rate is at 1.3% above the baseline from 2019-2020. The positive testing rate is at 13.5% this week. Rooks County is starting to receive the COVID-19 vaccine and will follow the Kansas Vaccination Phases. Rooks County has moved into Phase 2.

Macy Odle named to CCCC Fall 2020 Honor Roll

Macy Odle of Stockton was named to the Cloud County Community College Fall 2020 Honor Roll. To be named to this honor roll, students must be enrolled in a minimum of 12 hours and earn a semester grade point average of 3.6 to 3.899.
