Leona Mae (Kriley) Roy, age 91, Englewood, Colo., passed away December 15, 2020, at her home.

She was born April 15, 1929, to John and Irene Kriley, in Stockton, Kansas. Her father, John, who came across Kansas in a cover wagon, met his pretty bride, Irene, and settled on a small farm outside Stockton.

Leona was their only child, who loved attending gatherings with families who had children with whom to play.

Once Leona was 12, she was known for her good looks, stylish clothes (which her mother sewed), and dancing the jitterbug and hop. Gentlemen heard about her dancing feet. They came from near and far just to see her dance and dance with her. During 1942, Leona attended a dance and met Emile G. Roy, the love of her life. During their first kiss, Emile’s hat popped off. They instantly fell in love.

Emile was a paratrooper in WWII, with the OSS, and received two Purple Hearts for his courage and injuries in France and China. Upon his return home, they married on November 29, 1945, at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Stockton when Leona was 16 and Emile, 23. They had three children and their journey began. Bob, deceased 2005; Dianne Williams, Monument, Colo.; and Patti Challacombe, Denver, Colo.

In 1962 they moved to Denver, Colo. Leona worked for JC Pennys for 21 years. She started in gift wrap and worked her way up to the credit department. Later she became a full-time homemaker.

Her seven grandchildren were her delight—very important to her—and in turn they loved her dearly. They also had 10 great-grandchildren and 8 great-great-grandchildren.

Leona was known for her contagious laughter and loving spirit. No one was a stranger. Everyone was welcomed with love and kindness.

Her hobbies were cooking, cutting out coupons for everyone, caring for her lovely home of 51 years that she adored, and visiting with her friends and family. She loved people.

Their 65th wedding anniversary was celebrated at their home with several in attendance. Sadly, dad passed in 2012.

Services will be held Spring 2021, in Stockton, Kansas, where Leona will be laid to rest next to Emile, her husband of 66 years.

Mom, thank you for a lifetime of beautiful memories. We will never forget your laughter and endless love.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association in remembrance of Leona.
