Larry Martin “Walt” Newell
1944 - 2024
Larry Martin “Walt” Newell, 80, a lifelong resident of Damar, passed away on July 21, 2024.
He was born to Harvey and Docile Solange (Manny) Newell on March 30, 1944, on the family farm. He grew up with his five siblings: Myron, Glenn, Gary, Gloria, and Claudia.
Several months after graduation, Larry began his military career in September 1965 through August 1967. Eleven months of his service were in Vietnam. During that time, Larry was ranked as a Sharp Shooter (Rifle) and earned the Combat Infantry Badge, a Bronze Star, a Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal. He was honorably discharged in 1967.
Following his discharge, Larry worked in the oil fields and later retired as a successful residential and commercial painter.
He had a deep affection for animals, leading to a hobby of collecting model horses, which he enjoyed showing everyone who visited.
In his free time, Larry enjoyed hunting and fishing. He found solace and joy in nature and loved sharing those experiences with his friends and loved ones. A good game of cards was always a pastime he enjoyed with friends.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Gary.
Survivors include three sons: Shane (Heather) Newell and Travis (Tami) Newell, both of Bentonville, Ark., and Shawn Newell of Bella Vista, Ark.; two brothers: Myron (Connie) Newell of Plainville and Glenn Newell of Ellis; and two sisters: Gloria Carson of Hoisington and Claudia (Gene) Luetters of Salina.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, July 29, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Damar. Burial was in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery, Damar.
