Rooks County has seen a decrease in new COVID-19 cases throughout the county. This week, the absenteeism rate is at 1.3% above the baseline from 2019-2020. The positive testing rate is at 13.5% this week. Rooks County is starting to receive the COVID-19 vaccine and will follow the Kansas Vaccination Phases. Rooks County has moved into Phase 2.

I was recently asked to help judge an FFA speech contest. I happily agreed to help as I thoroughly enjoy listening to young adults present their research and memorized written work before a panel of strangers. Besides, setting aside a few hours to judge is the least I can do to help support a valuable organization that helped shape me.

This week, the Senate standing committees continued to hold hearings and bring forward legislation. The Ways and Means Committee is starting to work the budget bill with subcommittee meetings to report to the full committee in a few weeks. The Senate will be returning to General Orders where we will see the first committee bills to have a vote from the entire Senate.

Chester “Chet” Goodheart

Chester Lee (Chet) Goodheart, age 80, passed away on January 20, 2021 at his home in Loveland, Colo.

He was born in Hays, Kan. on February 24, 1940 to Floyd and Maxine (Sellens) Goodheart. He was the second born of four boys and was raised on a farm in Russell County, Kansas. He attended a two-room school at Sellens Creek District #58 in grades 1-8 and then graduated from Russell High School in 1958. This is where he met Norma Jean Brandenburg and after a courtship, married in May of 1960.
