The Kansas Department of Commerce’s annual Business Appreciation Month (BAM) award luncheon was held in Hays at the Rose Garden Banquet Hall on Thursday, April 7th. At the event six Rooks County businesses were recognized. These awards were from 2021 and had been delayed due to COVID concerns.

Brant’s Market of both Lucas and Plainville was a Regional Award winner in the Retail Category. Brant’s has been an operating meat market since 1922. Adam and Ashley Comeau purchased the business from the Brant family in 2018, and expanded to Plainville in 2020. Brant’s has received nation-wide attention including being named one of the Eight Wonders of Kansas Commerce.

The Rooks County Health Center was also a Regional Award winner. RCH was a repeat winner in the Hospital/Nonprofit Category. The Health Center is the largest single employer in Rooks County and has consistently expanded their services since opening the new hospital facility in 2008. Along with being named the Regional Award winner four times, RCH was also a Governor’s Award of Excellence winner in 2011.

BP Textiles of Damar was a Regional Award winner in the Service Category. Owners Bryce and Lindsey Trumpp started the business in 2015 and have continued to expand the business since that time, merging with Clean-Rite of Hays in 2018. The expansion was welcome news after the company experienced a devastating fire in April of 2018.

Palmer Hargrave Lighting of Plainville was a Merit Award winner in the Manufacturing Distribution Category. Chris and Kelli Hansen purchased the business in 2019 and have expanded local operations since that time. They have continued to maintain the high standards of quality of the original company that was established in 1946.

Wells Textiles was also a Merit Award winner in the Manufacturing Distribtuion Category. Most locals still recognize the firm as Classic Cloth. The main warehouse for the firm is located in downtown Pla inville. Owners Brock and Lauren Hudson of Houston, Texas, decided in 2019 that Kansas was the best place for their manufacturing and it has continued to pursue local expansions in Plainville.

And finally, Mill Street Market of Plainville was a Merit Award winner in the Retail Category. Owner Deanna Hammerschmidt takes pride in servicing Rooks County and Natoma areas for all their floral needs. The business also offers many other unique products and gift items.

Since 2000, over 80 Rooks County businesses have been honored with BAM wards, which are typically awarded during the month of June. Thank you to all the businesses of Rooks County for all their work and dedication to our communities.
