Quilt of Valor Ceremony to be held Monday, February 21st
The ladies of the Crossroads Quilt Guild have been working toward their goal to recognize all of the veterans in Rooks County by awarding them with a Quilt of Valor. Many veterans have already received quilts and 10 more will be recognized February 21st in Plainville.
Quilts of Valor is a nonprofit foundation whose goal is to cover all service members with a freedom quilt, honoring them for their sacrifices. The movement was originally started by Catherine Roberts of Seaford, DE in 2003 but has now spread across the United States and even has an international presence. Over 295,000 quilts have been presented to date.
On Monday, February 21st, there will be a Quilt of Valor Ceremony at 9:30 a.m. at the Cardinal Gym. Participants will include the Quilt Guild, VFW Auxiliary, local Scouts, and the students from Plainville High School and Grade School and Sacred Heart Grade School.
All veterans attending the ceremony will be recognized for their service. The following veterans will be receiving quilts: Shawna Glick, Ronald Hamel, Lynn Johnson, James Kleinschmidt, Anthony Knipp, Roger Morris, Dale Sims, David Vaughn, Jeff Werner and Donnie Wessel.
Also at the event, there will be nomination forms available for veterans who have not yet completed a form and would like to receive a quilt of valor. Anyone can nominate a veteran for this honor; but the veteran must agree to receive it. There will also be information available on quilt requirements for those interested in making a quilt for a future presentation. A veteran may prefer to receive their quilt in a private setting and that is an option.
The public is invited to attend and show their appreciation for our veterans.
