Madison Reed wins Kansas State championship in Sports Compact Division
Madison Reed was honored at the IMCA National Banquet held in the Cornhusker Marriott in Lincoln, Nebraska (the IMCA national headquarters) on Saturday, November 27th as the Kansas State Champion in the Sports Compact Division for the 2021 racing season. Racers from around the country and Canada were in attendance for the annual banquet and awards ceremony which honored series, state, regional and national champions.
Not only did Madison receive a plaque for his state title, he also received a second plaque as the Track Champion at the Rolling Plains Motor Speedway in Hays. To earn the title of champion, racers collect points on each track they run during the racing season that begins in March and ends in October. Madison stated, “Sometimes we were racing two or three nights a week during the summer in Salina, Hays, Oberlin, Colby, Dodge City and Goodland.” (Goodland was his favorite track this year, which Madison raced every Sunday. Madison said, “I had nine wins during the season and four of those wins were in Goodland.”)
Madison’s racing career began long before he sat behind the wheel of his 2004 Pontiac Sunfire over ten years ago. It started when his dad got him and his brother John diecast cars when they were young. They also went to the races at the Rooks County Fairgrounds while growing up, and this love for racing grew from there. Plus, Madison said that is when he started following NASCAR driver Mark Martin. “It is also the reason my number is 6 (6M) since that was Martin’s number. And I also base my paint scheme on my car after Martin’s racing colors.”
Madison said he continued to follow the sport when he went to college. He would go to the car races in Hays and worked at the track until he got his own car in 2010. Madison’s advice to anyone who is thinking about taking up racing is, “Just go for it! Don’t listen to people say you can’t do it.”
Madison’s racing crew consists of his dad, David Reed, and his wife, Sierra and their two boys, Charles and River. Madison said, “The boys loved being around the track and making friends with the other racers’ kids. We are all like one big family.”
In fact, Madison sat by his good friend who he raced against every week at the banquet and awards ceremony. Madison said his friend came in second. He also sat with another racer he met at the IMCA Super Nationals held in Boone, Iowa this year.
Madison said, “The Super Nationals was going to be a once-in-a-lifetime trip for me, but I missed getting into the ‘Big Show’ race by one spot, so I will be going back again.”
Madison wanted to give a big shout-out to Sierra, Charles and River, David and Karen Reed, Trumbo Racing, Dalton Gang Racing, Devin Schmidt Racing, Joel Dix, Dylan Dibble and Skylar Rudman.
