Working together to prevent food waste event Saturday, Sept. 11th, at Nova Theatre
FCE Council will also be holding a plant and garden produce exchange at event
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Economic Research Service estimates that 30-40% of edible food in the United States currently goes to waste. These 133 billion pounds of wasted food are worth an estimated $161 billion, which is a significant loss to our economy. At the household level, the average US family of four loses an estimated $1,500 per year on wasted food. Further, food waste accounts for 21% of the American waste stream.
When we throw food out, we are throwing away the money we spent on those items as well as wasting the water, energy, and labor used to produce that food! Also, food dumped in a landfill emits a large amount of methane gas, which is harmful to the environment.
Please join Rooks County FCE Council and K-State Research and Extension for an informative event and learn now to prevent that food waste! This free event will be held at the Stockton Nova Theater on Saturday, September 11, 2021, beginning at 4:00 p.m. The FCE is hoping the theater will have concessions for anyone who is interested in purchasing a snack.
You will hear two Zoom presentations on the big screen from Debi Kreutzman with the Kansas Food Bank and Beth Hinshaw about Community Gardens. Also presenting will be Theresa Niblock with the Master Gardeners, Pastor Ted Stapleton sharing about the Pantry of Blessings, and Anna Muir will share how to store and care for your produce.
The FCE Council will also be holding a plant and garden produce exchange. Bring a small potted plant from your own stash or cuttings off of a larger plant and/or some of your extra garden produce....to exchange for another plant or garden goodies you don't have!
Let's stop food waste in our household and community!
