Remember the little sayings, “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again”, or “Third time’s a charm?” The Bull City Opry Co. can only hope the third time is a charm as they try, try again to present the play, “FLYIN’ THE COOP,” aptly renamed “FLYIN’ THE COOP…AGAIN” this year.

The first attempt to present the show was in 2019. A few minutes before it was to begin, a ferocious storm moved in from the west. The cast and crew scrambled to get the scenery taken down and to safety before the storm hit. The wind was howling and rain was coming down in torrents as the last of the background was hastily carried to the inside storage area. Alton, Kansas received 7 ½ inches of rain that evening in a very short period with flooding and water damage in many areas. Most of the background was saved, but some panels had water damage and had to be replaced. The group’s background artist, Sheri Beisner, is busy performing her magic by repainting the new panels.

The second attempt was in the summer of 2020, but the play was cancelled due to COVID, as was the entire Alton Jubilee and many other venues that summer. It would have been Alton’s 150th celebration so that was rescheduled for this year, along with the Opry Co.’s 26th annual performance.

“If the Lord’s willin’ and the creek don’t rise,” the group’s third attempt will be held on August 28th at 7:30 p.m. Plan to attend and fly the coop with The Bull City Opry Co. and enjoy a fun and lighthearted evening of humor and music for the whole family. The evening is free, but a free will donation will be taken to finance next year’s performance. Bring lawn chairs or sit in the bleachers provided in the Alton City Park.
