Doris Jean Miller, 96, passed away on June 7, 2023, under Hospice care, and tended by her children and extended family, at SunPorch of Smith County in Smith Center, Kansas.

Jean was born on November 26, 1926, in Waterloo, Iowa to C.J. and Elizabeth (Rietz) Hamer.

Jean attended schools in Waterloo, Iowa. After graduating high school, Jean received a teaching contract at Bennett, Iowa on her sister Ruth's reputation. She taught 2nd Grade in Bennett, Iowa. Jean then attended two years at McPherson, Kansas, meeting a handsome young man from Burr Oak, Kansas.

She married Lyle Miller on June 11, 1950, in Waterloo, at the Church of the Brethren. Doris Jean taught for two years at Kensington before starting their family. Jean and Lyle served at many churches, the first being Kensington and Beulah. They also served at Pleasant View/Hunter, Scandia/Courtland/Norway, Tisdale/Burden, Stockton/Woodston, Rose Valley, and finally Cedar Christian Church. Jean served God for 70-plus years, living a life worthy of the “call.”

Jean joins her parents, C.J. and Elizabeth Hamer; husband, Lyle; son Mark; brothers, Merwin and Robert Hamer; sister, Ruth Riedesel; and a great-granddaughter.

Survivors include children David and Crystal of Winfield, Beth (Duncan) and Altan Hazen of Stockton, Kathy (Elam Miller) Burns of Burden, and James and Melanie Miller of Newkirk, Okla.: grandchildren, Shelby Miller, Shawn Miller Stover, Addie Duncan Jurgens, Gabe (Emily) Duncan, Jessica (Miller) and Shane Sloan, Jacob Miller, Becka (Miller) and Adam Tebben, and John and Josie Miller; and eight great-grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Friday, June 16, 2023, at 10 a.m., at Plumer-Overlease Funeral Home in Stockton. There will be no public visitation.
