After serving for a total of 43 years as a city manager in the state of Kansas, Richard Nienstedt retired last Friday, March 31st. Nienstedt was city manager in Stockton from March 1983 to December 1989. For the past 16 years, he and his wife, Rita, have called Ottawa home. “Stockton and Ottawa are two of our very favorite places,” said Nienstedt.

Rita, who first retired from the school system in Fort Scott after a 36-year teaching career, has retired a second time, having worked at Advent Health in Ottawa.

The two look forward to having time to come and go as they please. For starters, the couple has nine good reasons to travel, with their grandchildren spread out between Olpe, Garnett and Columbia, Mo. Nienstedt added, “We may even see you one of these days!”

Congratulations, Richard and Rita! We hope you enjoy and little rest and relaxation in the years to come.
