The race for the District 1 Rooks County Commission seat was the highlight of local interest during the Primary Election held Tuesday, Aug. 4.

Current District 1 Commissioner Jake Prockish chose not to seek re-election, leaving the seat open and drawing four Republican candidates into the primary race. When the votes were counted, Jon Voss emerged as the winner of the Republican nomination with 202 votes.

Other candidates seeking the Republican nomination included Rick Gianni, who received 74 votes; Ryan Brown, who received 58 votes; and Taten Pulec, who received 33 votes.

With no Democratic candidates seeking the office, Voss will advance to the General Election on Tuesday, Nov. 3.

Voters in Rooks County also weighed in on a statewide Kansas Constitutional Amendment question. Locally, the amendment passed by a vote of 613 in favor and 498 opposed.

However, the amendment did not receive enough support statewide, with approximately 39% of Kansas voters casting a “yes” vote and 61% voting “no.”

The General Election will be held Tuesday, Nov. 3, and will determine the final outcome of races across the county and state.

Rooks County Election Officer Laura Montgomery was contacted in an attempt to provide additional election statistics, including the total number of registered voters who participated in this year’s Primary Election, the number of mail-in ballots sent and returned, and the number of advance voters.

Montgomery stated those figures would not be available for this week’s issue of the Sentinel-Times.
