TRUE TREASURE. June 8, 1708 was a fateful day for the Spanish treasure fleet. They had come to the Americas to collect treasures to help fund their war against Britain. The fateful battle occurred some 30 miles off the coast of Columbia. Being only about 120 feet apart, the 70-gun British warship "Expedition" and the 64-gun Spanish galleon "San Jose" engaged in fierce fighting for about 90 minutes when the San Jose's powder magazines exploded sinking it immediately along with its huge payload of treasure. Only 11 of about 600 crew survived. Rediscovered by the Columbian Navy in 2015, the estimated value of the gold, silver, emeralds, and other gems is $17 billion. However, the Columbian Government classified the location of the wreckage as a state secret. Well, it's no secret how we can store up far greater treasure! Jesus Himself exhorted, "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also" (Matt. 6:19-21). Most of us will never be millionaires, let alone billionaires, in this life. No matter. The truth is that all the treasures of earth will one day be burned up when God creates the new heaven and new earth. But who can destroy all the treasures that are stored up in God's heaven? That's why Jesus exhorted his disciples to think and live differently by living for things eternal. The good news for all genuine Christians is that we can store up eternal treasure in heaven by living lives that glorify the Lord Jesus Christ—lives that strive for holiness, that strive to love God with our whole heart, that strive to love others as we love ourselves, etc. Two questions that we each need to ask ourselves - (1) What do I treasure? and (2) Where is my treasure?
