What Was Going On 14 Years Ago
The Department of Corrections was moving forward and readying the building for the reopening of the Stockton Correctional Facility on September 1st. Many people from the community and around the state had been instrumental in working toward this goal after it had closed in early 2009.
The Class of 2010 Valedictorian and Salutatorian were Alex Henry and Jameson Nyp. Thirty- three seniors received their diplomas at the 115th graduation ceremony.
Roy D. Waters (1920), Ruth Ann Marshall (1939), and Ida Mae (Day) Allison (1924) passed away.
Stockton High School freshman Koby Beougher had qualified for the Class 2A State Golf Tournament at Pittsburg after placing fourth at the Regional Golf Tournament in Hill City.
The Stockton High School boys 4x800 M Relay, consisting of Dustin Kriley, Nolan Weiser, Jameson Nyp, and Austin Smith, captured gold at the 2010 Mid-Continent League track meet held at Smith Center.
Looking Back 14 Years Ago (1996)—It was announced that Doug and Diedre Moore had sold their interest in the Smith Moore Funeral Home in Stockton and the Moore Funeral Chapel in Plainville to Ron Overlease of Lawrence. The Stockton High School girls track team won the 2A Regional Championship for the first time in history. The Tigers won five events and broke or tied four records.
56 Years Ago, Spotlighting The Year 1954—The Al G. Kelly-Miller Brothers Circus, billed as the second largest in the nation, was scheduled to perform at the Rooks County Fairgrounds at the end of May. Two residents of this community had fractured their collar bones as a result of accidents. They were Mrs. Cleo Baughman and two-year-old Mike Muir.
What Stocktonites Were Doing 98 Years Ago in 1912—When the news spread over town Monday evening that R.S. Osborn had finally yielded up his spirit to his Maker, there was a sense of great loss among those who had known him for more than a quarter of a century. The energy some men waste in making fools of themselves would make a fortune in any other line of endeavor.
Sandon and Julie Slaubaugh of Hays had announced the birth of twins Elija Sandon and Savanah Lynn, born on April 26th.
Olivia Marije Lewis was born on May 5th to parents Eric and Kathaline Lewis.
The Nova Theatre was showing the movie “Avatar.”
