What Was Going On 14 Years Ago

Scores of employees at the Schult Homes manufacturing plant in Plainville were shocked to receive a note terminating their employment along with their lunch on January 21, 2008, served up by a corporate spokesperson. The news was a total surprise to the employees, as well as Rooks County Economic Development Director Roger Hrabe, who said he had no clue about this closure. Congressman Jerry Moran released a statement following the news: “Schult Homes has a long history in Plainville and has played an integral part in the community. I was disappointed to learn of the news about the Plainville plant.”

Five Stockton citizens had declared their intentions to be a part of the April election for Stockton City Commissioner. The three-year terms of Mike Heenan and Kim Thomas were expiring on the commission. Filing for those seats, besides the two incumbents were: Darrell Sammons, Christine D. Sander and Charles D. “Chuck” Williams. The primary election was set for February 26, 2008.

Hundreds of airmen gathered January 16 at Davis Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, Ariz., to honor one of their own. Staff Sgt. Timothy Hahn, a native of Stockton, died August 4, 2007, when he tried to save a friend who was being swept away by rushing waters in Sabino Canyon near Tucson. On that day, Tim had joined a group of friends for a day of hiking. The group was met by a wall of water. Witnesses say Angela Knoche, 19, fell into the rushing water. That’s when Hahn jumped in to save her, but both of them died. The Air Force recognized Tim’s bravery, presenting his family with the Airman’s Medal, the highest honor awarded outside of combat, and a special stone plaque bearing his name. Attending the ceremony to receive the honors were Tim’s wife, Candice and daughter, Abrianna of Carlsbad, Calif., as well as his parents, Alan and Pauline Hahn and brother, Matthew, of Stockton, plus other family members.

Birth announcements featured Aislynn Kimberly Ray, born December 13, 2007 to Brandi Ray and Doug Pfeifer of Stockton; Evelyn Leigh Vance, born January 2, 2008 to Steve and Tara Vance; and Kaitlyn Grace Manche, born January 2, 2008 to Tom and Rhonda Manche.

Obituaries were published for: Ruth Rosalie Miller (1923); Inex Marie Jaco (1908); Elma C. Pulec (1918); and Howard R. Keith (1924).

At the U.S.D. 271 Board of Education meeting held January 14, 2008, resignations were accepted from Casey Robinson as superintendent of schools, from Julie Kriley as Food Service Secretary; and from Terri Bennett as junior high track coach.

Showing at the Nova Theatre was “Alvin &” The Chipmunks,” a global phenomenon to generations of fans.

Looking Back 14 Years Ago, Spotlighting the Year... 1994 — Employees of New World Visions of Lawrence conducted a meeting to answer questions about their program. The new city clerk, Sandi Rogers was profiled. (From ASTS) Shirley Hendrex: “After the Bobbitt trial, Carl won’t sharpen my knives anymore!” Loren and Areta Breckenridge were celebrating their 68th wedding anniversary. The Arts Council was presenting the play, “Let’s Murder Marsha.” Ben Franklin was having an Indoor Sidewalk Sale. The Maris Store was having a Football Widow Sale. The VFW was serving up mountain oysters, pool and dart tournaments and prizes for Super Bowl Sunday.

56 Years Ago, Spotlighting the Year... 1952 — Stockton’s oldest citizen, A. A. Waugh, died at the age of 99 on January 17 at his home south of Stockton. In light of the recent increase in the number of stolen cars as well as other types of robberies, Pop Simpson, Stockton’s city marshal, gave several tips to the public on how to avoid being robbed. (From ASTS) Joe Armstrong of Nampa, Idaho: “It is ten years since we left Rooks County, but it still seems essential to our happiness to have the ‘hometown paper’ delivered weekly.” Looking Backward Fourteen Years Ago: The Stockton Bakery was advertising cream puffs for 5 cents each. Julie Ann, three-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Emery Hamel of Damar, was released from the hospital after spending 33 days there due to an injury incurred when she pulled a dishpan of hot water off the stove onto herself.

What Stocktonites Were Doing 98 Years Ago, Spotlighting the Year... 1910 — Long & Tanzey, Quality Clothiers, is holding a BIG “Something Doing” Sale. Don’t wait to see if the Groundhog sees his shadow for it will be too late then to buy at these prices. Get busy and fit yourself out at this “Something Doing” Sale. An 11-year-old son of Mr. Sage, living on the Gerken place in Greenfield Township, ran away two weeks ago and went to the place of his uncle, Curt Norman, west of Webster. On Saturday Truant Officer Palmer brought the boy back and, on promise of good behavior, he was returned to his parents’ care.
