Spotlighting the Year…1966
* And So They Say: Coach Johnny Locke: “Kelly Desmarteau had the distinction of being the only player in the state tournament who hit 100% of his field goal tries.” John B. Smith: “It would take up less space in the paper if you’d just list the people who didn’t go to the tournament.” Rachel Barnes: “Stockton never had such an epidemic of laryngitis as there was the day after the tournament closed.”
* Coach Locke and the Stockton Rural High Tigers didn’t win the State Class B Tournament at Emporia, but took second out of 224 Class B teams in the state. The championship game with Lindsborg went into overtime with it looking like it would have gone into another overtime, but a Vikings player got the ball, turned and let it go at the gun to give Lindsborg the win with a score of 44-42.
Leneal Locke of Stockton and Bob Watt of Frontenac were the only unanimous choices to the State All-Tournament Team. Locke was also named on the Topeka Daily Capital All-Area Team and was the only one from the Mid-Continent League. Members of the team were James Berkley, Leneal Locke, James Walker, Kelly Desmarteau, Greg Stice, Bruce Stewart, Gerald Wehrli, Russell Sammons, Mike Jones and Richard Haines.
* Mr. and Mrs. Darrel Small were the parents of a daughter, Jodi Kay, who was born on March 11th. Mr. and Mrs. Jim Circle of Satellite Beach, Florida, had announced the adoption of a baby girl, Denise Lynn, born on February 13th.
* From The Feminine Slant By The Office Cat: Only a few more days to get all those things done which you had planned to do this winter.
* Looking Backward Fourteen Years Ago: The oil heater at the farm home of Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Sutton had blown up during a high windstorm. Considerable damage was done to the house. The band uniform fund was growing and 59 uniforms had been pledged. The Community had received one and one half inches of moisture during the week—rain mixed with snow.
* On sale at Oyer Food Market were large heads of cauliflower for 35¢ each, halibut steak for 79¢ a 12-ounce package, Fairmont ice cream for 69¢ a half gallon, and Butternut instant coffee for $1.19 a ten-ounce jar.
* The Saturday Night Special at Midway Café was a chicken fried steak for 69¢.
* Sears was holding its Grand Opening with sales on washers and dryers, gas and electric ranges, automatic dishwashers, console TVs, chest freezers, refrigerators, sewing machines and carpet shampooers.
* The area around the B&B Lumber and Supply Company had been improved by the laying of a wide cement sidewalk to the north side, extending the entire length of the building and also in front of the small building that had been turned into an office for Boethin Construction Company.
* Showing at the Nova Theatre were the movies, “Situation Hopeless, But Not Serious” starring Michael Conners and Robert Redford, and “Die! Die! My Darling!” starring Tallulah Bankhead and Stefanie Powers.
