Spotlighting the Year…1966
* And So They Say: Lucia Hamilton (Friday afternoon): “I’m going to shoot myself. I thought it was Saturday so I didn’t turn the soap opera on at noon.” Freddy Baughman: “It’s certainly getting so that no news is good news.” Betty Bobbitt: “I made a New Year’s Resolution to never say anything in front of a reporter again.”
* Tragedy had struck the highway of Rooks County when Jerry Kern, son of Mrs. Nellie Kern of Stockton, along with Brock Krysl, son of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Krysl, were involved in a one-car accident that claimed the life of Jerry. The accident occurred on New Year’s Eve at approximately 5:45 p.m. on US Highway 24, two miles east of the Graham County line. The 1958 Chevrolet, owned by Stanley Krysl and driven that night by Jerry, went out of control on a curve and turned over four times before coming to rest right-side up. Jerry was thrown from the car and when it came to rest, Brock was in the back seat. The car was completely demolished with Brock miraculously escaping with minor injuries.
* Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Vohs were the parents of a daughter, Noelle Louise, born on January 2nd. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Walker were the parents of a son, Ricky Lee, born on December 29th. Mr. and Mrs. Larry Sammons were the parents of a son, David Scott, born on December 29th.
* Winners of the Chamber of Commerce’s Decorating Contest were Lee Phelps and Chet Baxter in the yard lighting contest, with C. F. Rupp and Charles Ostmeyer taking first and second, respectively, in the home lighting contest.
* From The Feminine Slant By The Office Cat: Wouldn’t it be nice if everyone oozed the kindness and good cheer all year that they do at Christmas time?
* Looking Backward Fourteen Years Ago: Funeral services for Cpl. Frank LeFort, the first community youth to give his life on the Korean battlefield, were held at the St. Thomas Catholic Church. He had met his death at Heartbreak Ridge at the age of 20. Gary Pauley had received the God and Country award, an honor bestowed on very few Boy Scouts. Wendell Lynn Hulse, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wendell Hulse, was the first Stockton baby born in 1952 when he arrived on January 7th.
* Mary Stocking was united in marriage to Ferryl Locke on December 26th at the Christian Church. Mary Gary Eller and Kathy Elliston were the musicians. The bride, escorted by her father, wore a full length gown of white satin.
* Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Fix announced the engagement of their daugh ter, Mary Ann, to Donald Wayne McLaughlin. No definite wedding date had been set at the time of the announcement.
* The engagement of Martha Louise Bedore to Tom Talbott had been announced. A summer wedding was being planned.
* On sale at Slansky IGA’s 18th anniversary sale were two head of lettuce for 35¢, fresh pork roast for 39¢ a pound, six cans of frozen TV orange juice for $1.00, and four packages of cookies for $1.00.
* Mr. and Mrs. Joe Bonebrake had celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary.
* The third- and fourthgrades of the St. Thomas Parish had presented the play, “The First Christmas” on December 18th. Denise Creevan was the narrator, Mark Kreller was Joseph; Susan Wagner was Mary; Brad Hrabe was the Christ Child; Ronald Riedel, Gerald Byerly and Glen Hayes were the shepherds; Mike Hollern, Rodney Roy and Steven Schindler were the Kings; Leland Desaire was the innkeeper; and the angels were Jana Westhusing, Debbie Roy, Connie Brummer, Pam Axelson, Virginia Laska, Jeannie Stewart, Janey LeFort and Joyce Roy. Songs were sung by the angels to the 70 parents and other grades present. Mrs. Wanda Kreller was the director.
* Showing at the Nova Theatre were the movies, “The Glory Guys,” and “Cleopatra” starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton.
