SPOTLIGHTING THE YEAR…1965
* And So They Say: Warren Harding; “Rooks County has reason to be proud of its 4-H Clubs. Of the 134 4-Hers in the state chosen for Who’s Who awards this year, five were from this county.” Judge James Gilbert: “With this laryngitis, I am not taking any chances as I can’t holler very loud and I can’t run!” Jane Dix: “I am not kidding you. There is a wolf killing our livestock and I don’t mean a coyote. It’s twice as big.”
* A number of Stockton families had been involved in a four-way move during the week. Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Jackson had sold their place at the east edge of town to Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Laska, who moved into it from the Fenton property on South Pine. Mr. and Mrs. Merton Van Eaton sold their place and moved into the Fenton property. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Sooby were the purchasers of the Van Eaton property on South Second and moved into it from the Brokaw rental property. The Jacksons moved into the house on South Second belonging to Mrs. Jackson’s mother, Mrs. Earl Hance.
* Jerry McReynolds, the state beef winner and member of the Woodston Sunflower 4-H Club had been among the Kansas delegation at the National 4-H Club Congress in Chicago.
* Greg, the twelve-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Francis Mahoney, had received some painful, but not serious burns on his face when some leavings of a paint cleaner in an outdoor incinerator exploded as Greg had started to burn the trash. His eyebrows and eyelashes were burned off and his hair scorched. Some of his clothing was also scorched. He did not look so good, but was lucky the episode was not more serious.
* From The Feminine Slant By The Office Cat: The only comfort a mother finds in poor grades on her son’s report card is that she is convinced he isn’t cheating.
* Looking Backward Fourteen Years Ago: The farmhouse of I. H. Kenworthy had been destroyed by an early morning fire. There had been six auto accidents in the area during the week, most of them being caused by ice and snow. An ultra-modern, self-service meat counter had been installed at the Peter Pan Store.
* Miss Priscilla Osborn had become the bride of David All in the First Congregational Church in Stockton on October 30th. The bride chose a gown of peau de soie fashioned with an empire bodice of re-embroidered Alencon lace. She carried a bouquet of white stephanotis.
* Lloyd’s Jewelry was featuring twist-o flex watches, radios by Bulova, charm bracelets and Zippo lighters in their Christmas Gift Guide.
* Five-year-old Jerry Walker had had the misfortune to fall on a sharp object over the weekend. He received a gash above his eye, which necessitated stitches.
* Penneys was having a big Two-Day Sale as a head start on holiday shopping featuring fashion coats and jacket as well as an end-of-the-month clean-up sale.
* On sale at Slansky IGA were sirloin steak for 89¢ a pound, two heads of lettuce for 29¢, two boxes of Jiffy cake mix or frosting for 29¢ and six cans of frozen orange juice for $1.00.
* Showing at the Nova Theatre were the movies “Lawrence of Arabia,” and John Ford’s “Cheyenne Autumn.”
