* And So They Say: John Lawson; “Rain is getting closer every day.” Hazel Larson: “The new sign at the Maris Store makes the rest of Main Street look sort of small-townish.” Dean King: “Poor old dad isn’t good for much except to pay the bills.” Doris McMichael: “I don’t have any more time to sigh now than I did when I was working.”

* The work on the new front at the Maris Store was temporarily halted, but most of the huge new sign was in place on the face of the upper floor of the building, which had been entirely closed in. The sign was a nearly perfect replica of the store’s signature used on its stationery and advertising. It stretched nearly across the width of the front. The only part not in place was the portion of the flourish line under the word Maris.

* Members of the Rooks County 4-H Clubs were selling advance tickets for the benefit entertainment by Pee-Wee King and his Band. Along with Pee Wee were the Collin Sisters, Jim Vest, Russ Casewell, and the Golden West Cowboys. The money raised from the benefit would help with the construction of the new lunch stand at the fairgrounds.

* Craig Phelps had been chosen for membership in the School Band of America, which was to make its eighth annual European Concert Tour during the summer.

* The Ladies Auxiliary made a fine showing at the State Convention of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Great Bend. Joan Carmichael of Stockton was elected State Chaplain, and Myrna Kincaid was elected Color Bearer.

*Mr.and Mrs. Ed Draney, who built and were the first operators of the Midwest Motel at the east end of Main Street, were back at their old stand. Ten years before, they sold the business to Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Roy, and since that time, it had changed hands several times.

* From The Feminine Slant By The Office Cat: Wrinkles and gray hairs usually don’t tell a woman’s age. These can be covered up.

* Looking Backward Fourteen Years Ago: Alan Roy had stitches in his head as a result of a fall from a horse. The Community Health Center auction had netted $1,240.00 for the benefit of the building fund. Stockton had been without bus service for two weeks due to the bus strike.

* Mr. and Mrs. James Gordon Breckenridge of Woodston were going to celebrate their Golden Wedding anniversary on June 23rd.

* Miss Ann Dillingham was the guest of honor at the Rooks County Country Club at a luncheon followed by a miscellaneous bridal shower given by Mrs. Wayne McCaslin, Mrs. John B. Smith, Mrs. John Towns, Mrs. Leon Hamilton, and Mrs. C.W. Hamilton.

* Mrs. Connie Wilkerson had Sunday dinner guests in honor of Corky Hagan, who was to leave for the service later in the month.

* Miss Annetta Merripo Valentine became the bride of William B. Kennedy on May 24th in a simple ceremony in the chapel at Camp Pendleton, California.

* On sale at Webster’s Supermarket were a case of 24 twelve-ounce bottles of Diet Pepsi or Pepsi for $1.89, sirloin steak for 99¢ a pound, rump roast for 89¢ a pound, and t-bone steak for $1.09 a pound.

* Showing at the Park Drive-In were the movies “House of 1,000 Dolls” starring Vincent Price, and “The Ambushers” starring Dean Martin.
