What Was Going On 14 Years Ago

Our thoughts and prayers were for the people of Greensburg, where a massive tornado took out most of the town and killed at least 10 people.

Stockton had been notified of a potential 72-bed expansion at the Stockton Correctional Facility, which would require 14 additional staff positions. This expansion plan and others were included in the $39.5 million approved by Kansas lawmakers on May 2, 2007.

A county-wide clean-up had brought in over 100 tons of “stuff” to the landfill.

The “Know Your Neighbor” column, written by Linda Roy Cross, featured Dr. Morris C. Talbert, who, at 71, said he’s not ready to retire. “I’ve slowed up, but not slowed down,” he said.

A Baccalaureate ceremony was scheduled for May 16 for the Stockton High School Class of 2007 and their parents.

With 107 points, the Stockton Tiger boys claimed first place at the Logan Invitational track meet held May 1st. The host Trojans were second with 86 points. Bringing home first-place medals were: Micha Seitz, 800 Meters; Logan Bennett, Triple Jump; Jason Roth, High Jump; 4 x 400 Relay consisting of Micha Seitz, D. J. Kelly, Kyle Weiser and Leneal Weiser; and 4 x 800 Relay made up of Micha Seitz, Kyle Weiser, Cory Post and Leneal Weiser.

Robin and Marilyn Brown, and their daughters Nikki and Kodi, of Greensburg, lost their home in the recent tornado. The family was safe, however, and they appreciated everyone’s prayers. An account had been set up for them at the First State Bank in Plainville. Robin is the brother of Machelle Schindler of Plainville.

Laurel and William Bradbury and their five children were forced to move quite suddenly after a fire began in their kitchen from an unattended pan of oil heating on the stove. Their home at 819 S. Fourth, which they were purchasing from Mark Jarvis, had extensive smoke and heat damage, but they were insured and hoped to repair it. William Bradbury, using a fire extinguisher, had the fire put out in several attempts, but ended up in the hospital that evening with carbon monoxide poisoning.

Showing at the Nova Theatre was “Firehouse Dog,” starring Rex, Hollywood’s top-grossing canine, known for his extreme athletic abilities and diva-like demeanor.

And So They Say — Machelle Schindler (regarding the Greensburg tornado): “It’s so sad to think that the house where we celebrated Christmas every year is no longer there.” Connie Maddy: “My news is that my kids are all safe and sound after the storms.”

Darrell and Joy Sutor, Zurich, were celebrating their 64th wedding anniversary.

New postage rates were to take effect May 14, with postage for a first-class letter increasing to 41 cents.

Obituaries were published for Gary D. Mayhew (1935); Ruth H. Sterling (1923); and Bettie White (1920).

Looking Back 14 Years Ago, Spotlighting the Year... 1993 — Highway 183 was closed from Stockton to Phillipsburg for resurfacing. Traffic was detoured through Woodston, Kirwin and Glade. The Recreation Commission was offering golf lessons. Jennifer Wise was given a bridal shower. Bill and Elaine Korb were celebrating 40 years of wedded bliss.

56 Years Ago, Spotlighting the Year... 1951 — C. L. Ballard died suddenly on Sunday evening, May 6, as he sat on the porch laughing and joking with a friend. Charlie was past eighty years of age and had not been well for some time, but he possessed a vitality and brightness of spirit that seemed ageless. Stockton High School was set to graduate 48 seniors. It was lilac time in Stockton with many hedges house-high and loaded with blooms. The Record reported that it would be hard to find a town with more or nicer lilacs.

What Stocktonites Were Doing 98 Years Ago, Featuring the Year... 1909 — George Robinson’s team became frightened at the rear of the post office, and after getting clear of the mail wagon ran over a good deal of the townsite. attached to a double tree and a hitching post. George finally got things to right and went out on his run.
