Lady Tigers defeat Plainville Cardinals in MCL Tourney contest Saturday

The Stockton Lady Tigers and Plainville Lady Cardinals met up with each other in the 11th-place game of the 2022 Mid-Continent League Basketball Tournament last Saturday morning in Plainville with the Lady Tigers cruising to a 66-18 victory.

Olivia Dix scored the first five points of the game for Stockton, giving the Lady Tigers a 5-0 lead just over a minute into the contest. Plainville’s Taylor Rogers put the Lady Cards on the scoreboard at the 6:30 mark, but a conventional three-point play by Kaelyn Means, followed by a Means trey put Stockton up 11-2.

Dix would go on to score eight more points in the first period, with her sister, Ava Dix, adding a lay-up, Brin Muir, a shot, and Means a free throw, giving the Lady Tigers a comfortable 24-8 advantage going into the second quarter. Plainville’s scoring came on a three pointer by Emma Rudman, and one free throw each by Kadence Bruso, Cheyenne Rogers and Taylor Rogers.

Muir opened the second period with a bucket to push the lead to 26-8. Olivia Dix added six free throws, Muir one free throw, and Means, three buckets during the eight minutes giving Stockton a 39-12 at halftime.

The Lady Tigers came out strong in the third quarter, scoring 11 unanswered points on a basket each by Bodye Stithem and Aubrey Kesler, followed by seven consecutive points by Means to put Stockton up 50-12 at the 4:46 mark of the third period.

Kadence Bruso finally broke the ice for Plainville when she scored, but the Lady Tigers would go on to outscore their opponents 9-1 over the next three and a half minutes to lead 60-15 going into the final eight minutes. Scoring the nine points for Stockton were Olivia Dix with two baskets, and Means with a trey and a basket. Meairanda Sherraden scored a basket and Bruso tacked on a free throw for Plainville’s four points in the period.

The clock ran continuously during the fourth quarter with Stithem, Olivia Dix and Cappi Hoeting each adding baskets giving the Lady Tigers the 66-18 victory. Plainville’s three points in the period came from Rudman. With the win, Stockton improves to 2-10 on the season.

Kaelyn Means and Olivia Dix led the Lady Tigers in scoring with 26 and 25 points, respectively.

Plainville was led by Emma Rudman with eight points.

On Thursday, the Stockton Lady Tigers faced the Hill City Lady Ringnecks in the backside game of the MCL Tourney held in Stockton. The two teams had just played each other on the previous Friday with Stockton capturing a 38-28 win. Thursday’s game, however, belonged belonged to Hill City with the Lady Ringnecks picking up a 33-25 victory.

Hill City got on the scoreboard first with a basket by Rayleigh Shellito, but Olivia Dix answered with two free throws and a basket to give the Lady Tigers a 4-2 advantage at the midway point of the opening quarter. As it turned out, that would be the last time Stockton would lead in the game. Hill City went on to outscore the Lady Tigers 7-2 to take a 11-6 lead into the second quarter.

The second period was a low-scoring affair for both teams with Stockton’s lone point coming on a free throw by Olivia Dix with 16 seconds left in the first half. The Lady Ringnecks’ points came on a basket by Shellito and a trey by Kaylee Richmeier, resulting in a halftime score of 16-7, Hill City,.

Kaelyn Means opened the third quarter with a trey to pull Stockton within six points, 16-10. Shellito made a basket at the 4:57 mark to extend Hill City’s lead to 18-12, but six unanswered points by Means to finish out the quarter knotted the game at 18-all going into the final eight minutes.

The Lady Ringnecks’ Lilliana Spino broke the tie when she hit a shot with 6:41 remaining in the game, giving Hill City a 20-18 lead, and with 5:07 to go, Shellito made a basket which gave the Lady Ringnecks a 22-18 advantage.

Means made a layup for Stockton’s first points of the period, cutting the lead back to two, 22-20, with 4:12 remaining, but a barrage of turnovers during the next three minutes by the Lady Tigers led to 10 unanswered points for Hill City, and Stockton never recovered. Brin Muir tacked on a late trey, and Ava Dix made a shot with 25 seconds to go, resulting in a final score of 33-25.

Kaelyn Means led the Lady Tigers in scoring with 11 points.

Hill City was led by Rayleigh Shellito with a game-high 12 points.
