Emerson Lowry punches ticket to state wrestling tournament

Stockton High School freshman Emerson Lowry punched his ticket to the KSHSAA Class 3-2-1A State Wrestling Tournament in Hays after placing fourth last Saturday at the regional tourney in Norton. Lowry, who wrestles in the 126-lb. weight class, went 3-2 on the day picking up falls over Braydon Binder of TMP, and Ace Plummer of Oakley in the first two rounds, but losing by a fall to Carson Ochs of Hoxie in the semifinals. Lowry came back to defeat Binder a second time by a fall to assure him a spot at State this Friday and Saturday at Gross Memorial Coliseum. In the third-place match Lowry lost by a fall to Hunter Sisson of Phillipsburg to take fourth place.

Ryan Mongeau, also a freshman, nearly earned a trip to State, but lost in the consolation semis by a fall to Preston Bearley of Atwood-Rawlins County. Wrestling in the 285-lb. class, Mongeau went 3-2 on the day.

Zach Young also competed for the Tigers at Regionals in Norton, wrestling at 160 lbs. Young went 1-2 on the day, being eliminated in the consolation round 2.

At the state tournament this Friday and Saturday in Hays, Lowry (12- 15) is scheduled to take on sophomore Cullen Wilke (31-9) of Sabetha in Match 27 on Friday. More information can be found by going to kshsaa.org. Good luck, Emerson!

Hoxie won the regional tournament with 202.5 points. Hill City was second with 118, Phillipsburg finished third with 100, and Smith Center and Plainville rounded out the top five with 99 and 94.5 points, respectively. The Tigers finished 15th with 22 points. A total of 22 teams competed in the tourney.
