Remembering Oldies, but Goodies from the ‘70s
Who remembers Dr. Hook & And Medicine Show, an American Rock band that was popular in the 1970s? Some of their songs included “The Cover of the Rolling Stone,” “When You’re In Love with a Beautiful Woman,” “Sylvia’s Mother,” “Sharing The Night Together,” and “Only Sixteen.” The band introduced PRINCE in February 1981 when he first appeared on Saturday Night Live. Pretty cool!
Another ‘70s band is Queen. What surprised me was how many albums I have of theirs that I found when I was cleaning out one of my storage containers! Freddie’s voice was one in a million. And yes, I watched the 1985 Live Aid performance on TV, and I will testify just like thousands of others, that his singing gave me chills during their twenty minutes of making history.
Boston is another one of my ‘70s favorites, or at least one band I thought worthy enough to purchase one or two of their albums or cassettes. Others making that list are Chicago (Peter Cetera’s voice is like velvet), Foreigner, Bee Gees, Kansas, Jim Croce, Elton John, AC/DC, ABBA, Bread, and Deep Purple.
Though I don’t have any of their albums in my collection, I will throw in a few more of my favorites from that time: ZZ Top, Fleetwood Mac, Electric Light Orchestra, Sly and the Family Stone, Paul McCartney and Wings, and yes, I went to The Doobie Brothers concert in Hays decades ago.
Now for bands that ranked in the Top Ten during the ‘70s, though they are not my Top Ten. The list ranking Number 1 to 10 are Pink Floyd, Yes, David Bowie, The Allman Brothers Band, Genesis, Led Zeppelin, Neil Young, Black Sabbath, The Who, and Rush.
Some other bands and singers who were big in the ‘70s and need to be checked out include Lynyrd Skynyrd, Steely Dan, Talking Heads, Grateful Dead, Emerson, Lake and Palmer, George Harrison, The Rolling Stones, Santana, Supertramp, Bob Dylan, John Lennon, Judas Priest, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Uriah Heep, Van Morrison, Blue Oyster Cult, The Cars, Thin Lizzy, Cheap Trick, Iggy Pop, Rod Stewart, Billy Joel, Dire Straits, Kiss, Alice Cooper, Blondie, The Ramones, and Tom Petty. I know I am missing several bands and singers, but this list will at least get you more than started.
The 1980s music, which stands by itself, is what everyone talks about, but I thought it was time to give the 1970s its spotlight.
