Hahn and Northup are 4-1A State medalists
Ashlyn Hahn and Carolina Northup were both medalists at the KSHSAA Girls 4-1A State Wrestling Championships held last Wednesday and Thursday at the Salina-Tony’s Pizza Events Center in Salina.
Hahn, a sophomore who wrestled in the 120lb. weight class, placed fourth, and Northup, a 100-lb. freshman, finished in fifth place. Sophomore Rivver Long also qualified for State, but did not place.
It was a return trip to Salina for both Hahn and Long with the former placing third last year. Hahn had an impressive tournament again this season, going 4-2 en route to her fourth-place finish. All of her four wins were by falls. Her two losses came on a fall versus Kadynce Axelson of Chanute in the quarterfinal round, and a narrow decision in the third-place match against Kiana Grandclair of Hoisington.
The match against Grandclair was the second meeting between the two, with Hahn winning by a fall (1:28) over Grandclair at the Nickerson Invitational held on January 20. This time, however, it was Grandclair who claimed a hard-fought, 2-1 win over Hahn, resulting in a fourth-place medal for the Tiger sophomore. Hahn finished the season with a record of 32-4.
Northup also had a great showing at State, going 4-2. Her first win came on a sudden victory, but she was defeated in the quarterfinals sending her to the back side. Northup won by falls in her next two matches, but in the consolation semifinals Trinity Motter of El Dorado won by a fall. In Northup’s final match of the tournament, she wrestled her way to a fifth-place finish after getting a fall (3:28) over Morgan Base of Baldwin. Northup finished the season with a record of 24-10.
Long, who wrestled in the 190-lb. class, was defeated in her first two matches at State, resulting in a record of 13-19 for the season.
Congratulations to Ashlyn, Carolina and Rivver on a great season!
