Rylan Basart’s track season came to a fairy tale ending last Saturday when his final throw of the javelin was not only a PR, but it also earned him the title of Class 1A State Champion. Basart, who owned the top throw of 182-06 following prelims, led throughout the finals until Philip Doebele, a senior from Hanover, amassed a distance of 187-04 on his final toss of the competition to take over first place.

However, Doebele couldn’t start celebrating just yet, as Basart, who placed fourth at State last year with a throw of 169- 07, still had one opportunity remaining. And, in true Basart form, he rose to the occasion and unleashed a throw of 190- 01 to earn his spot atop the podium. Basart, who overcame a season-ending football injury to return for the track season, proved hard work and perseverance truly can make dreams come true.

Basart wasn’t the only Tiger to medal at State as junior Kaelyn Means brought home second place in Discus. Means battled it out at the top with Toree Slavik, a junior from Thunder Ridge, with the other competitors over 13’ behind them. Means’ best toss of 127-10, was nearly 12’ better than her second-place mark from State last season, but Slavik was able to get in a throw of 134-04 to win the event.

Despite a subpar performance in the prelims on Friday, the Stockton girls’ 4 x 100 Meter Relay of Katlyn Couse, Delany Snyder, Ava Dix and Jalia Creighton qualified for Saturday’s finals, assuring the young group of three freshmen and one senior of a medal. Unfortunately, they missed an exchange on one of the handoffs, disqualifying them, and consequently, they were not awarded medals. The future is promising for the girls, however, with threefourths of the team returning, so you can be sure they will work hard to make a return trip next season.

Freshman Ava Dix competed in both the 100 Meter and 200 Meter Dashes, but did not make the finals. Dix was very close in the 200, but her time of 27.62 in the prelims was .05 from qualifying for finals. She ended up placing ninth in the 200, and 15th in the 100.

Congratulations, Tigers, on representing our school and community at one of the largest track meets in the nation!
