SPOTLIGHTING THE YEAR…1966
* And So They Say: Nolan Harper: “I went fishing yesterday, but all I got was a boat ride.” Stella Willis: “You water, and water and water, and nothing comes up but weeds.” Leighton Marshall: “Friday the 13th isn’t always unlucky. My oldest son was born on Friday the 13th, was married on that day and his daughter was also born on Friday the 13th.”
* The Woodston area had had two fires during the week with considerable damage being done. The first had occurred on Thursday evening at the Andrew Byrnes home. Andy had been using a pickup to chase a calf and rammed his truck into a straw stack. Being unable to extricate the pickup, he took off on foot after the calf, and when he was locking it up, he heard an explosion It was a tank of diesel which was on the back of the pickup. The stack and truck were set ablaze and nothing could be done to save the stack or the pickup. The second fire occurred at the home of Mrs. Lillian Johnson. Her clothes closet had caught on fire after she lit a match to look for something in the closet. There was considerable smoke damage to the closet and the interior of the home.
* The new Lions Club offers were as follows: Kenneth Medley as president, Wayne McRae as first vice president, Harry Brewer as second vice president, Stanley Krysl as third vice president, Virgil Olson as secretary, Rupert Dyrden as treasurer, Von Scarrow as Lion Tamer, LeeRoy Doty as Tail Twister, Don Jenkins as assistant Tail Twister, and John Glendening, Albert McCue, Darrell Small and Lloyd Hollern as directors.
* Although the BB Dairi-Inn had been operating part-time for several weeks, the Grand Opening was to be held on Saturday and Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Sterling Bagby offering prizes and specials on their house specialties.
* The commencement ceremony at Woodston High School had taken place with Linn Dibble serving as salutatorian and Muriel Melton as valedictorian.
* From The Feminine Slant By The Office Cat: The Good Book tells us that our days are numbered. How true, how true! Social security numbers, telephone num bers, zip code numbers, area code numbers, street numbers, automobile tag numbers, etc., the list goes on and on.
* Looking Backward Fourteen Years Ago: Twenty-eight Stockton seniors received their diplomas with Jeanice Blauer the high-ranking student. Wayne McCaslin was the new city attorney succeeding D. A. Hindman.
* The Stockton Municipal Pool was getting ready to open on May 30th. Family season tickets were $20.00, student season tickets were $6.00, and adult season tickets were $8.50. Daily admission prices were 19¢ and 39¢.
* On sale at Slansky IGA were three cans of Wilderness pie mixes for $1.00, frozen Morton dinners for 39¢ each, one pound of sliced bacon for 69¢, and two cans of Delmonte chunk light tuna for 69¢.
* James Henderson Sammons, Mary Elizabeth Smith Bemis, Mary Beckley and Joseph McCormick had passed away.
* Showing at the Park Drive-In were the movies “40 Pounds of Trouble” starring Tony Curtis and Suzanne Pleshette, and “The Heroes of Telemark” starring Kirk Douglas and Richard Harris.
