Post-season honors for Kacen Sederstrom
Great-grandson of former Stocktonite
Kacen Sederstrom, a 2025 graduate of Goodland High School, capped off a very successful high school career, receiving several post-season baseball honors. The great-grandson of former Stockton resident Judy (Hamilton) Helm was recently recognized as the GWAC (Great West Activities Conference) Baseball Player of the Year and named First Team All League. It was his fourth all-league selection.
In addition to his all-league honors, Sedestrom was a First-Team selection on the 2025 Sports In Kansas 3A All-State list.
On the mound this season, Sederstrom went 4-4 with a 1.73 ERA. He had 69 strikeouts and 11 walks over 52-plus innings, holding opponents to a .189 average. During his career, he started on two state tournament teams as an underclassman and ended his career with 150 strikeouts and 89 hits.
When he wasn’t on the mound, he took the field at shortstop, posting a .968 fielding percentage with eight double plays and just two errors on 63 chances.
In his senior season, Sederstrom also led the Cowboys in hitting, amassing a .369 average with four doubles, two triples, and a .475 on-base percentage.
The Goodland Star-News’ Senior Spotlight article (May 23, 2025 issue) written by Matt Price featured Sederstrom as one of the “Band of Brothers,” a special group of senior boys from GHS who, despite personal reservations, were willing to put their own plans in jeopardy to help their teams and buddies be the best they could be.
Sederstrom, the smallest of the group and one of the smartest seniors at Goodland High School, was a four-year varsity letterman in baseball and basketball, excelling at both. Along with his baseball honors, he was also known for his three-point shooting and tough defense in basketball.
Although he had never played high school football, other members of the “Band of Brothers” group persuaded him to go out for the sport in his senior year. Kansas State University football signee Linkon Cure was the one who convinced Sederstrom he should go out, knowing he had good hands.
Sederstrom admitted to being rather nervous in his new role as receiver. He was aware of the fact that they often get blindsided by tacklers they never see coming…and he still had the basketball and baseball seasons ahead of him. But, because he didn’t want to let his “brothers” down, the short, slender baseball and basketball player donned the football pads in the fall.
Not only did Sederstrom catch a few passes during the season, but, at times, he became the “go-to” receiver when the Cowboys needed a first down. The king of the clutch catch indeed lightened the load for Cure, who went on to amass more than 1,000 yards in receiving.
Known as a fierce competitor, Sederstrom could always be counted on…whether he was hauling in an important catch on the gridiron, sinking a key three-point shot from the corner of the court, or delivering the much-needed pitch from the mound or a crucial hit from the plate. He will use that competitive spirit in the classroom at Fort Hays State University this fall, where he will major in accounting.
Kacen is the son of Doug and Hayley Sederstrom, and grandson of Mike and Shawn Jarmin all of Goodland.
