What Was Going On 14 Years Ago
Over 150 people attended the Crossroads concert at the historic Nova Theatre on Sunday, May 4 for the benefit of the new county hospital, the Rooks County Health Center. The Christian singing group, Crossroads donated their time and talent to help raise money for the Era of Caring Capital Campaign Fund. This free-will donation netted $1,630 in contributions.
The new Big Brothers and Big Sisters schoolbased mentoring program in Stockton was coming to a close for the school year. It was a very successful first year with 21 high school students volunteering to be Big Brothers and Big Sisters to students at the elementary school. The Bigs met weekly with their Littles to eat breakfast, play at recess, or read in the library.
The community came together on May 1st during the noon hour at the Main Street Christian Church in Stockton for the 57th annual observance of the National Day of Prayer.
Stephen Bellerive received a 10th-place medal at the Trego Invitational Golf Tournament held on April 24, at the Big Creek Golf Course in WaKeeney. Bellerive shot an 84 for the 18 holes.
The Stockton Tiger boys and girls made a good showing on May 5, 2008 at the Palco Track Meet held at Tiger Stadium. The Stockton boys won the meet with 117 points, while the Tiger girls were second with 93 points.
The Stockton High School Two-Man Team, consisting of Stephen Bellerive and Kyle Deutscher, was third with a score of 176 at the Mel Schremmer Invitational Golf Tournament in Phillipsburg.
Ruth and Lee Phelps, Stockton, had donated a new recumbent stationary bike for the benefit of Rooks County Health Center’s Cardiac Rehabilitation Program and its patients. “The new bike will allow patients with limited mobility to easily transfer to this bike and get the exercise they desperately need,” said Dinah Van Schuyver, RN for the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program. Lee Phelps said the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program had been a critical component in his recovery after by-pass sur gery.
Stockton fifth-graders had their D.A.R.E. graduation on May 2, 2008. The graduates were: Caleb Eck, Chelsea St. Clair, Anna Hahn, Morgan Beougher, Rilee Brown, Alison Miller, Taten Pulec, Tyler Williams, Allison Saunders, Natalie Johnston, Alexis Ott, Michaela Odle, Rachel Devero, Chelsea Killen, Marissa Prieto, Ryan Allen, Erik Scott, Richard Schleicher, Andrew Bellerive, Cayden Conyac, Justin Wiltfong, Casey Deutscher, and Christian Hamel. Theatre was “Leatherheads,” directed by George Clooney, who also starred as Dodge Connolly, coaching and managing the Duluth Bulldogs, a ragtag of miners, farmers and anyone else interested in kicking around the pigskin.

Looking Back 14 Years Ago (1994) —The school board hired D. Neill Wheeler as superintendent, spent $50,000 on new equipment and upgrades, and voted in major improvements to the track surface. Tiger football coach Phil Wilson was leaving Stockton to become principal at Moscow High School. Kaye Pearce, executive director of the KSHSAA, was to be the guest speaker at the Awards Banquet. Melvin M. Ray II, 6, received a broken arm and a gash on his head after being hit by a car driven by John B. Vermillion, 19.
56 Years Ago (1952) — An explosion wrecked the new home of Mrs. C. E. Hinkhouse in Palco, killing her and her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Darrel Hinkhouse, and injuring Darrel. The home had been completed six months earlier for Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Hinkhouse, and since the death of her husband on April 17, her son Darrel and his wife had been staying there. The tragedy stunned not only Palco, but the entire county. She was survived by her son Darrel and other son, Kenneth.
98 Years Ago (1910) — Ed Stewart’s little sevenyear-old boy went into his father’s pasture in Iowa Township Tuesday afternoon and tried to drive a cow with her young calf over to the other cattle. The cow attacked the boy, knocked him down and bruised his arm and chest, and he would doubtless have been killed if Ed had not seen the trouble from afar and ran to his assistance. The family was terribly frightened for fear he was injured internally, but so far nothing worse than external bruises has appeared.
