The four candidates on the ballot for Stockton City Commission were featured with their answers to the Sentinel’s questions. City election was slated for Tuesday, April 1st. Also on the ballot was the question concerning extending a portion of the city sales tax collected to help fund the new water distribution project.

The Stockton Wrestling Club qualified seven out of ten wrestlers for the State Championships in Topeka. Joel Green, Nolan Lowry, Braden Higdon, Jeremy Hrabe, Derek Spires, Carlos Gallaway, and Blaise Wilson all placed in the top four and would represent Stockton in Topeka, March 29 and 30.

Showing at the Nova Theatre was “Fool’s Gold” starring Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey.

The Stockton Police Department announced that Donald Earl and Kelly Nelson were new graduates from the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center. Stockton’s newest officers went to the training center Nov. 12, 2007, in Yoder, and graduated March 7, 2008. Officers Earl and Nelson accomplished many tasks while at the 14-week training course, including being certified in TASER, Emergency Vehicle Operations and Collion Investigations. The Stockton Police Department was pleased to have their newest team members back and eager to be a part of the police department and the Stockton community.

Area students traveling to the 4-H Global Conference in Kansas City were: Garrett Kennedy, Carson McMullen, Conrad Griebel, Shayne Runnion, Chelsey Kriley, and Extension Agent Rachael Boyle.

Diana Baxter enjoyed watching her grandson, Aiden Rohr of Russell, hunt for eggs at the Sigma Phi ESA Easter Egg Hunt on March 22.

Parents Janel and Tim Kriley were excited to announce the birth of their daughter, Lilian Elaine Kriley, born on Valentine’s Day, 2008. Also excited was brother Chance Kriley. Local connections were Grandparents Connie and Eldon Kriley and Great-grandmother Lucille Laska, also of Stockton.

Obituaries were published for Lila J. “Joann” Hollingsworth (1935); Josephine “Jodie” B. Seales (1925); Stanley F. Schmitz (1915); Minnie Velma Dibble (1907); Chester Roy Watkins (1921); and Harlan ‘Wayne’ McRae (1933).

Looking Back 14 Years Ago, Spotlighting the Year... 1994 — U.S.D. 271 Superintendent Jim Deines was leaving to take a similar position in Ransom. A large grass fire a mile west of Schneider Ranch burned a onemile wide by two-miles long stretch of ground. Former Damar resident Jerome Laurin won a Ford Mustang convertible and $11,000 cash on The Price Is Right. Waller Motor Co. received the Customer Satisfaction Award for 1993 from the Olds Division of General Motors. Dr. Talbert’s dental office was moving to 624 S. First.

56 Years Ago, Spotlighting the Year... 1952 — A large crowd attended the grade school operetta featuring Hansel and Gretel in spite of the big blizzard that had found its way to Stockton that Friday. Opening at their new location in Woodston was Livingston Sundries. They were serving Sealtest Ice Cream exclusively with smooth malted milks, sundaes for any day, and kingsized sodas. The Union Pacific Railroad had free vacation planning folders to destinations such as Sun Valley, Idaho; California; the Pacific Northwest; Colorado; Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons; the Grand Canyon National Park; Las Vegas and Hoover Dam; and western dude ranches.

What Stocktonites Were Doing 98 Years Ago, Spotlighting the Year... 1910 — Friday and Saturday were big egg days in Stockton, the receipts at this market being over 138 cases of 30 dozens each, or 4,140 dozens in all. This represented 49,680 working days for the hens in this territory, not counting the home consumption record. An average of 15 cents was paid, making a total money value of $621.00 for the suplus. They were all laid in less than a week. A movement has started in Graham County to put down a hole 3,000 feet in the hope of striking something. No doubt there is something under this country worthwhile and someday somebody’s hole will strike it.
