Kansas teen killed when UTV overturns
ANDERSON COUNTY—A Kansas teen died in an accident just after 11:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 7th, in Anderson County. The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2015 Polaris UTV, driven by 16-year-old Wyatt L. Whitham of Kincaid, was southbound on NW Marshall Road two and one-half miles west of Garnett. The driver attempted to turn east onto NW 1750 Road. The UTV struck the south embankment and overturned onto the driver’s side. Whitham was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to Frontier Medical-Kansas City. Two passengers, a 15-year-old boy and a 14-year-old boy, both from Garnett, were not seriously injured and not transported. (Hays Post)
Man accused of burglary at rural Kansas cell tower
CHASE COUNTY—On Wednesday, June 4th, Lyon County Sheriff’s deputies arrested 43-year-old Jeremy Cox on a warrant after a reported burglary of a cell tower at 50th and Camp Creek Road in southeast Chase County, according to a social media report from Chase County Sheriff. The theft occurred on May 8th. Multiple requested charges were forwarded to the Chase County Attorney’s Office, including burglary, criminal trespass to a critical infrastructure facility, criminal damage, and theft. Cox is no longer in custody, according to online jail records. The sheriff’s office advised Cox’s accomplice to go ahead and turn himself in. (Hays Post)
Police investigate if delivery driver took dog from Kansas home
SALINE COUNTY—Law enforcement is investigating a report of a missing Shih Tzu from a home in the 1600 block of Beverly in Salina, according to Salina Police Captain James Feldman. The reporting party told police that they had a delivery of food through DoorDash on June 7th, and a surveillance camera shows the delivery person picking up the dog, but it does not show the person taking the dog. Officers have contacted DoorDash and are awaiting a response regarding the driver’s identity so they can conduct an interview. (Hays Post)
KHP makes arrest after chase through Russell, Ellis Counties
HAYS—The Kansas Highway Patrol arrested a California man on Monday, June 9th, after a chase through Russell and Ellis Counties. At 5:29 p.m., a trooper tried to stop a vehicle driven by Shelby L. Miller, 54, of El Sobrante, California, because the tag indicated the vehicle had allegedly fled from law enforcement in Seward County, Nebraska, earlier on Monday, said Trooper Tod Hileman. The trooper initiated the stop at about milepost 183 of Interstate 70 between Russell and Gorham. At about 5:35 p.m., the trooper lost sight of the vehicle on southbound U. S. Highway 281. Multiple units, including the KHP aircraft out of Hays, were deployed to search for the suspect, Hileman said. At 6:22 p.m., a trooper located the suspect vehicle going southbound on Fairgrounds Road in Ellis County. At 6:31 p.m., the KHP aircraft located the vehicle going eastbound on I-70 at about milepost 182. The vehicle crashed at about 6:33 p.m. in the 600 block of Front Street in Russell, and the suspect was taken into custody. The suspect is facing requested charges of felony fleeing and eluding, reckless driving, resisting arrest, and leaving the scene of an accident, Hileman said. The suspect is also wanted for charges in Nebraska. (Hays Post)
Bobcat kitten wanders into Kansas home
JOHNSON COUNTY—During a recent severe thunderstorm, Lenexa Police Animal Control Officers responded to a very unexpected and very wild intruder, according to a social media report. A Lenexa resident discovered a bobcat kitten had found its way inside their home, likely seeking shelter from the storm. The Animal Control Officer safely captured the young feline and kept it warm and secure overnight. The next day, with clearer skies, the kitten was safely released and happily reunited with its mother nearby. As Lenexa grows, encounters with suburban wildlife are likely to become more common. Therefore, it is requested that people work together to protect both humans and wildlife in the community. (Hays Post)
Teen hospitalized after SUV, camper blown over on I-70
THOMAS COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 11th, in Thomas County. The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2014 GMC Yukon driven by Danielle J. Long, 38, was eastbound on Interstate 70, approximately four miles east of the K-184 Brewster exit. The driver reported her camper trailer became unstable due to high winds, and she was unable to regain control of the camper. The SUV and the camper left the roadway twice before flipping completely onto their roofs. The vehicles slid across the eastbound lanes and came to rest at the edge of the shoulder and median. The camper remained attached to the vehicle’s safety chain during the event. EMS transported one passenger, identified as 15-year-old David C. Long of Crawfordsville, Indiana, to the hospital in Colby. The driver and two other passengers were not injured. All four were properly restrained, according to the KHP (Hays Post)
